Threadfin cardinalfish - Apogon leptacanthus

Species Name: Apogon leptacanthus

Synonym: Apogon leptacanthus

Common Names: Threadfin cardinalfish

Family: Apogonidae (Cardinalfishes)

Order: Perciformes (Perch-likes)

Class: Actinopterygii (Ray-finned Fishes)

Max. Size: 6.0 cm / 2.4 inches

Environment: Marine reef

Origin: Western and Eastern Indian Ocean, Northwest, Western Central and Eastern Central Pacific

Temperament: Harmless

Company: Apogon leptacanthus (Threadfin cardinalfish) is a suitable species for a reef setup.

Aquarium Setup: Apogon leptacanthus (Threadfin cardinalfish) is a night active bottom feeder, and must be given a dark place in the aquarium in which it can seek shelter during the day. In the wild, it would seek shelter under ledges and corals. They prefer lower temperatures, but 72-78 degrees F. is fine. Threadfin cardinalfish will tolerate a few tens of ppm of nitrate, but little or no ammonia and nitrite.

Food: Apogon leptacanthus (Threadfin cardinalfish) eats small fishes, benth crustaceans, zoobenthos and mobile invertebrates. Small fishes, shrimp and other fresh and frozen meaty foods are a good aquarium diet. You can also successively train your fish to eat frozen processed food instead. Avoid flakes, pellets and other dry prepared foods since they won’t provide your fish with enough nutrients even if you do manage to get the fish to eat it.

Breeding: We have no information about breeding Apogon leptacanthus (Threadfin cardinalfish) in aquariums.
