The Gulf Toadfish is a bizarre fish that lives on the bottom throughout the east coast of the United States. Beyond its strange appearance, it also is very vocal. Males use a deep foghorn like call to attract females during the mating season. When a female responds, they mate and she lays her eggs in his nest and departs. He then protects the eggs and newly hatched young until they leave the nest. They can live in very bad conditions with very little food and can even survive out of water for fairly long periods of time.
