This amazing type of fish is characterized by its unique flat shape. Famous for their appearance, flounders tend to have both eyes on the right side of their faces, making flounder one of the most distinctive sea creatures. But there's more to flounders than just their appearance. Found on the seafloor, flounders have developed the ability to camouflage themselves and blend in with their surroundings to avoid predators. This incredible adaptation makes them fascinating creatures to observe in their natural habitat.

Flounder is Loaded with Nutrition

Flounder is a highly nutritious option. Not only is it a low-fat and low-calorie source of protein, but it's also rich in vitamin B12, vitamin D, selenium, and Omega-3 fatty acids, which help improve joint, cardiovascular, and mental health.

The  Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend a seafood intake of about 8 ounces per week for most people. However, pregnant women are advised to consume slightly more, between 8 and 12 ounces per week, to support their growing babies.

Among the many health benefits, we can name the following:

  • Consuming flounder can help lower the risk of heart disease, unlike red meats which are high in fat and saturated fats. Flounder is also low in cholesterol and helps decrease the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and colon cancer.

  • Flounder helps children grow stronger since it brings vitamins that are much needed during initial brain and muscular development. 

  • Flounder is rich in minerals. Did you know that flounders are also a source of calcium, iron, and vitamin C? These healthy vitamins can help with alleviating mild symptoms of depression. 

  • Incorporating flounder into your diet may help promote healthy blood flow in the brain, which can lead to a decreased risk of developing dementia and other neurodegenerative illnesses.

This delicious fish is highly versatile and can be cooked in many ways. Baked at a good temperature, sauteed with delicious and tender veggies, blackened in a skillet over medium heat, and even fried! One thing to remember is not to overcook it since it can become dry and tough. 

If you are on a Pescatarian Diet, don’t forget to add this wonderful source of protein at least once a week. A pescatarian diet is known for its health benefits because of its similarities to vegetarian diets. Some fish, like salmon, and flounder are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce the build-up of plaque that can lead to heart disease and strokes.
