Gernika & Gaza

Pablo Picasso’s painting Guernica has become a symbol for civilian suffering in wartime. It was painted after the German bombardment of the Basque town Gernika in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War. In the Basque streetscape, you can find several pastiches of the painting, for example this one in Zarautz which was made in 2014 after Israel’s latest war in Gaza:

Another outdoor copy of Guernica is this mosaic in Gernika itself, calling for “Guernica” Gernikara, that is ‘”Guernica” to Gernika’:

You can read more about the painting at the webpage of the Reina Sofia Museum, where the original is, and at the webpage of the municipality of Gernika-Lumo.
