about

A fresh of breath air. Not to be tied to some emotional connection with song titles and their content all of the working titles were cooking methods.

Jim Bilgere provides some wonderful keyboard contributions via a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88 and a wonky 5-tring fretless bass. The other part of the melange, Jim Dunlap, did the synthesizer work, not just button pushing the Arturia Keylabs but that soulful articulation to evoke some sort of expression to bring life to samples and what not.

When I got my first synthesizer there were patch guides called Flute. And what I was hearing from Wendy Carlos, Jean-Michel Jarre, or Rick Wakeman wasn't about making electronic boxes flitter and trill like acoustic instruments. But Cjhick Corea made them lilt and dance like their own nuance. A skill to acquire beyond just beating the black-and-whites (which is no simple skill in itself).

The wave of samplers brought synthesists to another set of forks in the road. Ensoniq Mirage had its Orchestra Hit. Press a key, get a hit, and be part of the band more than owning a Les Paul and a Marshall stack entitled you to sound like Jimmy Page.

And twenty or thirty years roll on and I have more than a reasonable facsimile of a Hammond organ generated by a computer the size of a book. It was good enough for the folks I played with and my neighbors, all of whom didn't have to pitch in to move it from site to site, much less hear it when I decided to acoustically remodel the house. But I still can kick pedals and such. Don't think the YouTuber's hands, much less their Minilaunchkeylab could withstand a 5-finger full-chord rip up and down the keyboard, much less their Flamin' Doritos and Red Bull fingers end up in the hospital.... and not able to play their synth pad worship gigs.
