Camshaft: What it is and what its function

The camshaft plays a key role in any automobile, as its good condition is synonymous of healthy engine. Find out in this article what the main purpose of it and  how it can preserved.

Camshaft function

The camshaft is located at the top of the engine block. It is a rotating part, made of metal, which contains pointed cams, whose main function is to be the shaft that commands the valves.

This shaft, often used in internal combustion vehicles, guarantees the circular motion in a an alternating or periodic movement. It is in this movement that the intake and exhaust valves open and close according to the engine explosion.

The valves opening and closing, whose responsibility is the camshaft, allows the fuel to enter on the cylinder and the gases generated to be released into the exhaust system.

When should the Camshaft be replaced?

To replace the camshaft it is necessary to remove the engine head.

The removal process may seem simple, but it requires specific tools, such as the assembling tool or a torque wrench  –to reassemble the engine head at the correct torque according to manufacture requirements.

The engine opening process increases replacing costs, but in contrast, the camshaft is a relatively affordable component.

Camshaft Prices

The prices start at 100 euros and can exceed 700 euros. In the case of its replacement, the cost starts at 500 euros.

There is the possibility to repair a camshaft by reconstructing the more damaged lobes . However, there are several opinions that advise it to be replaced by a new one.

It is in this chapter that your mechanic´s advice comes in. He / She will certainly give you the best solution for the problem.

Problems

One of the most common camshafts problems is a possible damage to the drive shaft. Improper lubrication during engine operation causes long-term problems and has a significant impact on the engine block.

In theory, a cam shaft should last 250,000 km in an engine with good maintenance. It is important to remember that lubrication inside the engine block, such  as the timing belt and engine segments are  fundamental for an increased engine life.

Signs of a possible problem in the camshaft:

Camshaft sensor

The camshaft sensor contributes to a good engine condition and alerts for the following situations:

  • Adjustments warnings ;
  • Replacement warnings;
  • Wrong position

The first contact pint for a camshaft in a poor condition is exactly this sensor and, for this reason, it should be kept in good condition. It is through this equipment that future damages can be prevented

  • Engine head;
  • valves;
  • Pistons;
  • The connecting rods.

If needed , the replacing sensor price starts at 30€

Camshaft broken sensor symptoms

When a light on the instrument panel indicates that something is not right inside the engine, it may be an indicative signal of failures in the camshaft sensor. These failures can be :

  • Burned Sensor;
  • Poor contact with the engine control unit;
  • Errors after an engine remap

A driver can normally  drive his vehicle with these sensor problems. However, you should take into consideration the symptoms explained above

In this situation, KROFtools advises you to do a professional check up as soon as possible.
