Jan, Brooklyn

“Living in Baltimore is interesting—every day,” says Jan. She loves the city’s diversity of people and culture, as well as the welcoming nature of Brooklyn’s neighbors. She admits there is room for improvement when it comes to the relationship between police and the community. Perception and trust are critical. Take the time to talk to people, she says, because if you don’t know someone, you don’t trust them.

Despite the challenges, Jan sees the potential. “I am hopeful for Baltimore, like every other citizen, that we will actually be able to overcome some of our problems—and really realize what I think is the greatness of this city.”

Bria HightowerOfficer

From the Beat

For Bria Hightower, the decision to become a police officer was sparked by tragedy. “In 2008, my father was murdered. The homicide detective who handled my father’s case still works here, and we grew a relationship. Eventually, it made me want to become a homicide detective so I can give families...the same justice I got.” In her three years in the department, she’s learned a lot about herself—and what it means to be a female officer in a historically male-dominated profession. “I think I’m able to bring compassion, affection,” she says. “People may try me...but there are many who respect me because I’m a female. This career will show how strong you are.”
