Inhabits rocky shore and coral reef areas of the Indo-Pacific at depths of around 30 meters. In Japan, from Wakayama Prefecture southwards and the Ogasawara Islands. A species of wrasse. Its large black spot by the tail fin will fade as it matures. As a juvenile, the black spot is a wide band at the rear of its body. They have the ability to change sex from female to male.
