The scenic 35 foot Allen Falls is located in St Lawrence County just southeast of the Potsdam area. A short herd path travels about 0.2 miles to a view of the upper part of the waterfall. A steep drop on another herd path will take you down to a swimming hole and a full view of the waterfall. The waterfall is on the West Branch St Regis River aka High Falls Creek.

From the pull off parking area, look across the road for a mowed area and a slight opening in the weeds. This is the start of the informal, but well used trail. The trail crosses a small stream before reaching an area of old blow down from a storm in 2008. There is a side trail that branches left that follows a dry creek bed that leads to a view of the upper falls. There were primitive campsites located near the falls. To reach the swimming hole/main view point, you will need to make your way steeply down the incline toward the creek.

There is a picture, map and video below of this waterfall. To reach Allen Falls take NY 11B 6.6 miles east out of Potsdam to the small hamlet of Southville. Turn left on County Route 47 and in 1.5 miles turn right onto Allen Falls Road. Park in a large gravel parking pull off near the bridge for the creek. The GPS coordinates are N44 39.200 W74 51.072.

Remember to wear proper shoes and take extra care on wet rocks. We also suggest checking out New York Waterfalls: A Guide for Hikers & Photographers and Hiking Waterfalls in New York to help you plan your waterfall adventures.
