Deutsch: Widerstand Deutschlands gegen den angestrebten Verkauf von Luxemburg an Frankreich, 1867.
König Wilhelm III bietet als fliegender Händler Luxemburg zum Kauf an. Bismarck als Marktpolizist verbietet das. Im Hintergrund sieht man, wie der Verkauf Alaskas von Russland an die USA von statten geht, als Hinweis für zweierlei Maß. Die geschlossene Bude Hannover verweist auf die Einverleibung des Königreichs Hannover durch Preußen. In der Bude Hessen finden anscheinend gerade die Landabtretungen Hessens an Preußen 1866 statt.
English: German opposition against the intended sale of Luxembourg to France, in 1867.
The heading says: "On the big country fair" The caption says: "Market Policeman: Go away! Business of that kind are not tolerated here. You don't even have a trading license. Flying Dealer: Please, Mister Gendarme, when I don't bring home any money today, I'll get beaten up by my beloved wife." The policeman is the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the dealer is King Wilhelm III of the Netherlands. In background the Alaska Purchase is depicted as reference to double standards. The closed market booth Hanover (with the hint ausverkauft = sold out) refers to the annexation of the Kingdom Hanover by Prussia. In the booth Hessen obviously the 1866 cessions of Hessian territories to Prussia take place. |
