Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Bio-Incubator in Leuven - a space filled with innovative biotech companies. Connecting with familiar faces and meeting new ones truly made my day, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share insights with such a vibrant community. During the seminar, we looked into a drug discovery project, exploring the discovery process from establishing biophysical assays to Hit identification and confirmation, and eventually concluding with lead optimization. Titled "The Power of Biophysics," the seminar posed the bold question: What is the power of biophysics? It is the unique ability to deliver a direct readout - a key differentiator compared to most other applications. During the seminar, I was met with clever questions from the audience, such as the effects of protein modification on protein integrity, the impact of compound aggregation on binding results, and the variety of protein constructs out there and the pain to choose the right construct. The importance of clear and actionable data in drug discovery projects is evident. While non-biophysical assays are capable of processing ultra-high throughput campaigns, data ambiguity often hinders understanding of druggability of a target, mode-of-action, and often it remains discussable if there is clear interaction between drug candidates and the protein target at all. As I reflect on our time together, I'm reminded of the power of collaboration and the effectiveness of integrating various assays to approach projects from diverse perspectives. If you're facing similar challenges in your drug discovery projects or seeking clarity in your assay data, I'd love to connect and to discuss perspectives.

Behind the scenes - the foundation story of 2bind and NanoTemper Technologies‘ role in it. Way back in 2008, NanoTemper Technologies unleashed a powerful biophysical tool: MicroScale Thermophoresis (MST, or TRIC as it is called now). This incredible tech let scientists detect molecular interactions fast, precise, reliable and in solution. But here's the twist: not everyone could own this cutting-edge instrument. Recognizing the need for broader accessibility, in 2011, 2bind was born, as spin-off from NanoTemper and in partnership with Gernot Längst from the University of Regensburg. The new CEO Thomas Schubert's mission: give people access to biophysical tools. There is the need for instruments and there is the need for services. While NanoTemper focused on crafting high-quality instruments, 2bind provided top-notch biophysical analytical services. This idea worked well! The synergy propelled 2bind into a hub of biophysics expertise. In 2016, NanoTemper stepped back, allowing us to thrive independently. In 2017, I joined as Chief of Operations and together we brought over 20 skilled scientists to the team as well as a compelling toolkit of 13 biophysical technologies, not just the suite of NanoTemper Technologies (PANTA, Tycho, nanoDSF, Dianthus, MST/TRIC), but other great formats from Dynamic Biosensors, Malvern Panalytical (Creoptix), Sartorius, and others. A large and diverse set of assay formats now allows us to operate fully results-driven and provide customized biophysical solutions to support our clients' drug discovery and other development programs. We are happy about the valuable technology and testing partnership between 2bind and NanoTemper Technologies. And thanks to Philipp for his recent visit - as always, a pleasure to have you here! #biophysics #molecularinteractions #innovation #partnerships

Behind the scenes - the foundation story of 2bind GmbH and NanoTempers‘ role in it: Everything startet back in 2011. Professor Gernot Längst from the University of Regensburg had a good idea. He approached us. And then we’ve founded the Contract Research Organisation (CRO) 2bind GmbH together with him. Why did we do that? The idea was, to make our new biophysical technology „MicroScale Thermophoresis“ available for everyone. Everyone needs molecular interaction measurements in free solution. Not everyone must own an instrument to do so. There is the need for instruments. There is the need for services. At NanoTemper we fully focus on high quality instruments. So we founded 2bind together with Gernot in 2011: to cover the need for services. To make MicroScale Thermophoresis measurements available - as a service. The idea worked well! We got Thomas Schubert on board. As CEO he shaped and grew 2bind globally. 2016, NanoTemper stepped back, 2bind thrives independently. 2bind is now fully independent since years. It provides a wide range of different biophysical measurement services. Not only from NanoTemper Technologies but also from Dynamic Biosensors and many more. And this is good. I’ve visited them in their new rooms - they’ve just expanded. Great to see so many biophysical instruments. Do you want to read more “behind the scenes” posts?
