Description

Alfons WALDE (1891-1958) "Frühling in Tirol" Kizbühel Tirol 1932 Oil on board, signed lower left and dated on the back, titled and localized in ink on a label on the back in the artist's hand. 64 x 49 cm Reference: We thank Dr. Gert Ammann for confirming the authenticity of this work. The work is listed in the catalog raisonné by Gert Ammann and Michael Walde-Berger under the number D-LA-1144. A certificate of authenticity will be given to the buyer. Provenance: Collection of Mr. B. (Courtelary, Bernese Jura) then by inheritance to the current owner. Note: Alfons Walde, a major representative of the modern art movement in the Austrian Alps, is currently considered one of the most important Austrian artists of the 20th century. Best known for his mountain landscapes, he captured their beauty and majesty with a unique touch, characterized by vivid colors and an expressive painting technique. In terms of composition and colorization, our work is similar to the large version of "Frühling in Tirol" from 1929, which is kept in the Kitzbühel Museum. In our painting, we can observe a tripartite composition: in the foreground, a house with a balcony and a flat gable roof, as well as red flowers in the garden by the road. In the middle, on the sunny slope that rises to the left, are a church, a farm and green meadows. Finally, in the background, the mountain range with its shaded rock faces and snow-covered flanks alternating sun and blue shadows. All these pictorial elements indicate that winter is still present in the peaks, but that spring is coming to the valley. The pictorial density of this painting and the different passages are modeled with a generous brush. The differentiation of colors in the green parts illuminated by the sun and those in the shadows emphasizes the depth of the space. The mountain range in the background dominates in an imposing and majestic way, with nuanced blue tones in the shadowy areas and thick whites for snow, under a clear blue sky. In many parts, Walde's characteristic way of painting is visible: he spares the color on the contour lines and lets the cardboard show through. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Alfons Walde created universal motifs such as "Summer in the Mountains", "Summer in the Tyrol" and "Early Spring in the Tyrol". The motif "Spring in the Tyrol*" is a testimony to his talent to express with pictorial density and a clear choice of colors the moments of emotion and atmosphere that he tried to create. We would like to thank all the speakers, in particular Dr. Gert Ammann and Mr. Micheal Walde-Berger.
