Teaching focus
Karen Schwelle teaches courses for both undergraduate and graduate students, including Communication Tools for Academic and Career Success in Engineering, Publication Writing and Technical Writing. She has designed and delivered workshops on topics including Language Features in Research Articles and Online Resources to Refine Your Writing. She also provides one-on-one support with writing and speaking projects.
Biography
Karen Schwelle joined the Engineering Communication Center in 2019. Previously, she led the English Language Programs in the Office for International Students & Scholars at Washington University in St. Louis. She has developed and delivered courses and other services to address the communication needs of students and researchers in architecture, the biomedical sciences, business, engineering, law and social work. She has served as chair of the English for Specific Purposes Interest Section in TESOL International Association, and is a member of the Consortium on Graduate Communication.
She holds an MA in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, an MA in German Literature and Cultural Studies from Indiana University at Bloomington and a BA from Augustana College in German and Spanish.
