Thomas's obituary
Thomas Evans Kornfeld, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly
on August 4, 2023 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 72.
Born in Athens, Georgia, Tom was reserved, tough, generous and kind. He was proud of his
heritage and the grit it provided him. Tom's father and grandparents, Alexander and Mathilde
Kornfeld, fled Nazi occupied Austria; and his mother’s side of the family were Norwegian
farmers that immigrated to Iowa. Tom proudly drove an old pickup that personified his humble
nature. He took remarkable care of his loved ones, and placed much sentimental value on things
passed down to him by his family such as his grandfather's pocket knife, his great grandfather's
steel letter opener, his dad's combs, and his grandmother's ice scrapper. Although he valued the
past, he did not care to discuss it unless it was used to motivate himself or others for future
endeavors.
Tom graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in accounting and finance and
worked as an accountant for over 40 years. Tom was a man with an extremely high work ethic
who thoughtfully and selflessly took a big picture approach in an effort to do the right thing no
matter what.
Tom’s interests included stock analysis, sports, sustainability, and respectful debate. He was a
careful and thoughtful decision-maker who always considered all true possibilities before
making decisions.
He was an avid fan of playing and watching tennis, rooting for the Georgia Bulldogs, and took
great joy in spending time with his family, particularly playing with and teaching his
grandchildren, especially with his beloved bulldog, Churchill, by his side.
Tom is survived by his daughter Lacy Kornfeld (Tafa); son Alexander Kornfeld (Nicole);
grandchildren Neveen, Augustus, Zaid and Major; and brother Hans T. Kornfeld.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 32 years Nancy L. Kornfeld, to whom he was
extremely devoted, and his parents Dr. Walter and Doris Kornfeld.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that you honor Tom's memory by visiting an
elderly person, returning your shopping cart, unplugging appliances not in use, eating all the
food that you put on your plate, tending your garden, and showing compassion for those going
through hard times.
A memorial service will be held in memory of Tom on August 13, 2023 at 4:00 PM at Temple of
Israel in Greenville, South Carolina.
