The Notebook stars Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams competing in against each other in gender-neutral Gotham Awards category

The former couple received nominations for their work in "Barbie" and "Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret," respectively.

Nearly 20 years after the film's debut, awards season has written a new (unexpected) chapter into The Notebook's legacy.

The Gotham Awards unveiled Tuesday its annual list of nominations, including contenders in its relatively new gender-neutral acting categories that distinguish performances solely by lead or supporting status. Among the Gotham Awards' 2023 Supporting bracket are Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, who will compete against each other in the same category nearly two decades after they first played on-screen lovers in director Nick Cassavetes' 2004 literary adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' beloved novel.

Gosling scored his nomination for his critically acclaimed work as Ken in Greta Gerwig's blockbuster hit Barbie, while McAdams' work in Kelly Fremon Craig's movie adaptation of Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret scored her a spot among this year's nominees.

Though Gosling and McAdams, who both hail from Canada and dated for two years after starring together in the romantic tearjerker, will compete against each other at the Gotham Awards, they previously won a joint award for Best Kiss at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards.

Despite receiving praise for her turn, McAdams is far less likely to translate her Gotham Awards nomination into a nod at the upcoming Oscars, but Gosling's performance is widely expected to sustain momentum leading up to the 2024 Academy Awards, where he'll presumably score a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Other notable potential Oscars contenders who received 2023 Gotham Awards nominations include Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), Sandra Hüller (The Zone of Interest), Charles Melton (May December), and Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone, who scored her Lead nomination for The Unknown Country, as Killers was not submitted for Gothams consideration.
