INFORMATION:

Classification:

Boraras Brigittae

Order Cypriniformes

Family Cyprinidae

Origin:

It appears to be endemic to southwestern Borneo, although records of occurrence are scarce. The type locality is 'Bandjarmasin', a port city in the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Selatan (South Kalimantan), and following Kottelat (1991) its range extends westwards to the Jelai Bila River basin, near the city of Sukamara, where it is found it is said to occur sympatrically with the congener B. merah.

Its form is:

Mature females have noticeably rounder bellies and are often slightly larger than males. Males are generally more attractive and dominant individuals often display intense coloration.

Its size is:

15 – 20mm.

Parameters required:

PH: between 4.0 and 7.0

Temperature can range between 20ºC and 28ºC

Aquarium size:

Although small, it still needs space to swim and dominant males will form temporary territories during spawning, so it is best to keep a group in an aquarium with base dimensions of at least 45*30cm.

Feeding:

A good diet for Rasbora mosquito can consist of:

- Canned food type: cyclops

- Dry feed type: Immunpro Mini

Behavior :

This species is very peaceful, but is not an ideal community fish due to its small size and rather shy nature. It will do best when kept alone or with other tiny species such as Microdevario, Sundadanio, Danionella, Eirmotus, Trigonostigma, Pygmy Corydoras and small Loricariids such as Otocinclus.

It is also an ideal companion for shy anabantoids such as Sphaerichthys, Parosphromenus or the more diminutive Betta species, and in a planted setting can be housed alongside freshwater shrimp of the genera Caridina and Neocaridina.

It is a schooling species by nature and should really be kept in a group of at least 8-10 specimens. Keeping it in decent quantities will not only make the fish less nervous, but will result in a more effective and natural looking display. The males will also display their best colors and interesting behavior as they compete with each other for the attention of the females.
