It is renowned for its vibrant red or maroon colored crownshaft and leaf sheaths, which give it the appearance of wearing lipstick, hence the common name.

This palm species typically grows in moist, tropical environments and can reach heights of up to 20 meters (about 65 feet) in the wild. Its slender trunk is usually about 10-15 centimeters (4-6 inches) in diameter. The foliage consists of pinnate leaves that can grow up to 2-3 meters (6-10 feet) long, with leaflets arranged along the stem.
