80cm Schwerer Gustav/Dora case and projectile

One of many ammunition related items at the National Museum of Military Vehicles in Dubois, Wyoming. (will post more when I have time)
Photos show the projectile and case, the description, and a very nice diorama showing the gun, with support vehicles shown for scale.

The projectile is a replica, but I think the case is an original.

There was an original projectile and casing at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland back in the late 1980s. They were sort of forgotten, set outside the back of the ordnance museum exposed to the elements. I only knew what they were because I had a book on German railway guns.

Projectile and case were there until the end of public access to the grounds and museum. Visited there not long before it closed in 2009.

A lot of things were sadly left to the elements and my understanding is that the new museum down south is not open to the public.

Fret not, the Museum was actually financed by a private entity, the “Ordnance Museum Foundation”, and is being/was moved to Fort Lee in Virginia.

The “rename it to hide our past” people have changed the name of the base to, “Fort Gregg-Adams”. It is a Joint Services base also used by the USAF.

I have not heard when the museum should re-open, but many of us are hopeful it will be within our remaining life time… I have contact info inside the base, and am awaiting a call back on status of the museum.

I’ll have to dig out my photo album and see if I have a picture. When I was there in 1987, the case and projectile were separate and not on display like this.

The latest that I had heard was that this was not entirely correct. I have been told by a Gov employee in the area that Ft. Lee is following the latest trend of certain military museums, being re-identified as “Training Centers”. Sounds like a small difference, but the effect on the non-military public is significant. As a Training Center they fall under different rules, and do not have to be open to the public.
The collection completed its move to Ft. Lee a number of years ago, it was initially given a small area for display which I am told has expanded in the years since. When, if, or to what degree it ever opens to the public remains in question and should not be taken for granted.

Are any of these cases known to be in any private collections?

Never understood why the APG museum decided to place the projectile inside the case. Just to impress the visitors? It makes no sense.

Granted the base renaming, (Fort Gregg-Adams), and status as a training center, but, like the Museum at USMC Quantico and Army Base Belvoir Museum, I believe the museum is still run by and paid for by the Ord. Museum Foundation, and is not within the secure areas of the base, or at least that is the information I have received thus far.

As I said, when I get an answer from Fort Gregg-Adams I will pass the details on.

There was either a, IAA Member or, BOCN Member who had one. Wayyyyyy back he showed the process of taking apart the stairwell in his house to get it into his man cave and collection room downstairs. I wish I could remember more.

Your memory is still good!
Larry Huisman (yes, he was an IAA member) wrote an article titled “Another One Goes Down to the Basement” showing a few pictures of him moving a 80cm Dora case into his basement. It is in Journal #437, pages 10 & 11. (May/June 2004). I don’t seem to have the original photos to the article, else I would recreate them here.

I also vaguely remember a couple of other images of the thing half way down the stairs, but now it’s me not remembering where those were seen…
