— No 1 : The Food Issue —

About Garstig

Garstig is a new publication about women, created by women. This first issue is focussed on the food industry,
and is dedicated to giving female chefs across the country a voice.

We have aimed to draw attention to the people behind the food, while highlighting the underrepresentation of women in the professional kitchen across the UK. Within the UK food industry, only 18% of chefs are female. To this day women are still classified as ‘cooks’, where as ‘chef’ is only seen as a male role. Behind closed doors, these women are pushed around and harassed. Their working environment is often hostile, or not equal between the sexes by any means.

This is an issue that is unknown to many, and needs to finally be brought to light within society. This issue of Garstig will not only highlight each woman’s strength, but importantly their love for cooking. Celebrating these female chefs by sharing their craft, their stories and their experiences; in the hope of inspiring other women to not give up or give in, but push back to pursue this male dominated career.

Garstig is an ongoing project between Marie-Lisette Cropp as photographer and Paulina Stoellger as graphic designer and illustrator, the editing and art direction is a shared role between us. This feministic magazine will be an ongoing series, highlighting the voices of women in male dominated industries.

marie Marie-Lisette Cropp
Co-Founder and Photographer

Garstig is a publication that celebrates women in male dominated industries, which is something very personal to me and close to my heart. I have experienced sexism working in these industries for many years, so I strongly believe this is something that needs to be brought to light and spoken about more. My personal photographic work focuses on gender issues in society, looking at the ones who break the gender stereotype.

I will always be concerned about feminism, and even though I never worked in the food industry myself, I experienced sexism in my personal and my professional life since years. Therefore, this magazine is definitely a passion project. Working on ‚garstig’ really opened up my eyes to the true horrors that happen in the professional kitchen, but also to the front of house staff. I truly believe that this project sparked my interest in editorial work and pushed my thinking of what layout and illustration can do to communicate real life issues. I fell in love with working collaborative and to really get to know the subject of my work head on. It is a privilege to be able to team up with such inspiring and hard working women to tell their stories in a creative way.

Thank you all for participating, reading and sharing!
