When we started our garden this year, I was adamant I wanted lettuce and kale. I was tired of lackluster greens at the grocery. I wanted to walk outside, pick enough for one dinner and know it wasn’t picked too late or that it tasted bitter. Salad control freak? Maybe.

Greens are so easy to grow, even in small containers and spaces. In my latest piece on Inspired Home I talk about where to grow lettuce, how to grow it, how to care for lettuce and how to harvest it. I put all my research in one place for all the would-be gardeners and if you have a few seasons of planting on you, I want your secrets!

Because growing salad isn’t the end point of the process, I also talk about my new love of the salad spinner. As someone who is a kitchen tool minimalist (you can read how to streamline and organize your kitchen , or my list of must-have kitchen tools to see what I mean), I had layers of distain for a salad spinner. Until I grew greens and until I had it in my soil covered hands.

You just cannot replicate the efficacy of a salad spinner for dirt and grit removal. It’s admittedly, also entertaining to use and if you have kids and you’re a smart parent, you’ll easily hand that sucker over for hours of entertainment.

I also like to think it’s the thing one would pull out of their pocket on an idyllic impromptu picnic in a vineyard or on a farm to cut some gouda as you rip open a baguette, but that’s just me.
