"Wollen" means "to want", and so does "möchten". The choice is dependent on the notion that each verb can convey in different statement contexts:
"wollen" can come across as pressing, demanding, or strong-willed/determined, whereas "möchten" is more along the lines of "wish for/to", or a polite "would like to have/do". Children are usually taught to say "ich möchte" instead of "ich will" when asking people for something.
