They mean practically the same. The only difference I've noticed so far is that gucken is barely used here in Austria (we usually say schauen). But it is extremely common in Germany. So it's very much a regional thing, don't worry too much about it :)

@Lea876 "barely used" is quite nice said -- I know people who would punch another Austrian who says "gucken" in the face.
I also would cringe if someone would say "gucken". No one here uses it. It's typical German.
Like Pfannkuchen und Aprikose, which are typical used in Germany but not in Austria.
Sooo as Lea said don't worry too much about it you can use both.
Still the good thing about "schauen" is... idk 😂
Just I personally would recommend you to use "schauen" as first choice😂😂

@Carina_III Haha well yes you're right. I would never use gucken either but I didn't want to generalize too much

There is also the standard German word „sehen“ which can mean “to see” “to look” “to watch”
„gucken“ and „schauen“ is only used for “too look” or “too watch”.
And i can confirm that there is a regional aspect. I am from the west of Germany and we use both “schauen” and “gucken” but the last one is more common here and “schauen” more is commonly used in the southern German language area (Bavaria, Austria).

@Tobiger yeah but I think sehen is more "to see" whereas "schauen" is "to watch"

@Carina_III @Tobiger i think schauen and sehen are interchangeable most of the time.
Ich habe mir den Film angesehen. Ich habe mir den Film angeschaut.
Both sentences mean exactly the same. But again, "ansehen" has a very German touch to it (in my opinion), I'd always say anschauen.

@Lea876 yeah but you can't say: "Ich schaue einen Vogel"
it needs to be: "Ich sehe einen Vogel" so it's just interchangeable in some cases

@Carina_III yes very true, thanks for pointing that out. Probably "ansehen" and "anschauen" are interchangeable, whereas for "schauen" and "sehen" it very much depends on the context
