folgen: to follow (basically equivalent)
verfolgen: to pursue (a goal, a person (that generally does not want to be followed, and/or in secret), to follow (information about a subject that interests you, politics, sports, ....), to persecute
nachgehen: to investigate, (very rarely as "to walk behind/follow after another person"), also "to pursue/work" (a job or hobby)
hinterherlaufen: to walk/run after something/someone (generally in order to catch up to them/it), (fig.) to pursue (generally in a somewhat derogatory context and related to romantic interest)
