Ich öffne die Tür.
Ich mache die Tür auf.
Du öffnest die Dose.
Du machst die Dose auf.
Er hat den Schrank geöffnet.
Er hat den Schrank aufgemacht.
There isn't really a difference in the meaning, but I guess "aufmachen" is a bit more common than "öffnen" is. But it's also more complicated to use it because you have to separate "auf" and "machen" (at least if you're talking in the present tense) so I would recommend you to use "öffnen" (because you're still a beginner)
