They mean pretty much the same.
"Unmittelbar" is a bit more formal though, not something you would normally hear somebody say in a day-to-day conversation

In the context of time there are more or less the same. But one can unmittelbar use in other contexts, e.g.
In diesem Land wird der Präsident unmittelbar vom Volk gewählt.
In meiner unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft gibt es keinen Supermarkt.

@CasoGuertel und "sofort" kann man nicht in diesen Beispielen verwenden? (and a meta question, is it plain wrong for "nicht" to be where it is in my question here, or does it just add more emphasis to the fact that my question is related to your examples?)

Your question is fine.
In diesem Land wird der Präsident unmittelbar vom Volk gewählt. Unmittelbar means here directly, they don't elect someone who elects the president.
In meiner unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft gibt es keinen Supermarkt. Unmittelbar means here something like "in my closest neighborhood".
in the first example "sofort" would change the meaning or at least it is less clear.
In the second it would be just wrong.

@CasoGuertel Thank you! So I am assuming that it is wrong in the second example because sofort can only be used as an adverb. In the first example it would be somewhat correct, but not as good an option as "unmittelbar". So, I will from now on just opt for "sofort" only when I am talking about time, just to be safe, and use "unmittelbar" in other cases.
