LANDFILL GAS CLIMATE IMPACT CALCULATOR
Landfills emit significant amounts of gas over a long period of time, with small landfills emitting up to 400 cubic meters of gas per hour and larger landfills emitting up to 10,000 cubic meters of gas per hour. These emissions continue for several years after the landfill closes and doesn’t receive any more waste, in most cases for more than 30 years.
Landfill gas (LFG) consists mainly of about 40 to 50% CH4 and 40 to 45% CO2. The landfill gas should be collected to gain energy, to prevent smoldering fires and deflagration, to reduce bad odor and protect the climate.
The Global Warming Potential (GWP) of methane is between 25 and 30 times higher than the CO2. By flaring (burning) the gas, hundreds of millions of tons of CO2-equivalents are not released into the atmosphere.
