WhitherisYoungAustraliaDrifting?

Fromallsuchnotionswemost emphaticallydissent.ForyoungAustralia'seducationalsystem,judged byitsresults,notbyitspossibilities,standsalreadycondemned.And byitseducationalsystem,weunderstandthecollectiveinfluenceswhich aresobroughttobear'ontheplastic, impressionablechild-mindastomake itacceptideasthatwillmoreorless determineitsfutureconduct.

Thelastingwelfareofsocietyfundamentallydependsupontherationalcalibreoftheindividualsthat constituteit.Baseduponasound ethicalsystem,societywillheundoubtedlysound.Andnoethicalsystemcanheconsideredsoundwhich perenniallyexcludestheteachingsof revealedreligionfromitsIragramme.Thecontraryisequallyevident.Aquotationfromthewritings ofDr.PaulDuboiswillbestillustratemycontention

Anynationhonestlybattlingfor truesuccesscannotaffordtounderratethemoralnecessityofreligion. Toimpressuponthereceptivechildmindarespectforcivicvirtuesisa praiseworthyambition,butitisonlyauxiliarytoasolidreligious training.When'nenprostitutethe nobilityoftheirspiritualnatureto theexclusivepursuitofmaterial ends,andtothesoleindulgenceof thesensualappetites,theyriskthe moralpossibilityofmaintainingfor alongperiodtheprogressiveprestigeoftheirrace.Thereisinworldhistory;perhaps,nomorestriking illustrationofthisunhappyfactthan thefateoftheRomanEmpire. Equippedwiththemostelaborate artsofahighmaterialcivilisation strengthenedanddefendedbyapowerfularmytheknownworldministeringtoitsluxury; proficientto aneminentdegreeinthekindreddomainsofphilosophicthoughtandeleganceofliteraryexpressionso'ouch sothatitsliteraryle..acyisthe modelasaellasthedespairofthe choicestintellectsofourmodernuniversities-yet.unfoldtherecordsof theirmoralhistory,andyouwill

humanheart,andyoushallnothave longtowaitforitsmoraldecay. Religiousactivityisalmostasessentialtosocietyasbloodisfor,iodily life.Depletetheveinsoftheirelixir, andspeedilywillthebodybecome dryassummerdust.Deprivesociety oftheconsolingandconstructiveinfluencesofreligion,andruinwill slowly,perhaps,butinevitablyensue.

RaceSuicideandDivorce Ouremptycradlestellacrueltale ofshirkedresponaibitities,andevince acallousindifferencetothedignity ofasoulredeemedbytheprecious BloodofJesusChrist.Theunlawful relationswhichexistbetweenour schoolchildrenoftheoppositesexes mustconvincetheutmostpioussceptic thatmoralityiscrashingalongto acrisisundreamtofinthemostdegradingdaysofNero'sbrutalreign. Thescandalousroutineofourdivorcei courtshasbecomesocommonafeatureofsociallifeastohavestifled thenaturalsenseofshamewithin ourbreasts.Themorbidsensationalismwhichhasevidentlygrowsto beanecessaryfeatureofcontemporaryjournalism;theunhealthytextureoftheallegedhunmourouspaper;theagnosticleadingarticleIn ourmorningpaper;theviciousliteraturethatisstrewn"thickas leavesinVallombrosa"intheshelves andonthecountersofourbookshopscannotbutmakethejudicious grieve.Onlylastweekthewriter strolledintoaleadinggoldfields hook-storeinquestofoneofthe leadingworksoftheday,butwhile theplacewaslitteredwith:hemost infidelproductionsofallages,the requiredpublicationaasconspicmars byitsabsence.Then,thereisthe noteofreligiousindifferencewhich likesomesubtlegeniusofdestructionpervadesthesocialatmosphere extinguishingintheheartsofmen andwomenthelastsmoulderingemberof('hristianity,mustmakeus painfullyconsciousofthefactthat ourhopeofagreatnationlustscal veryshallowgrounds.Thewelfare ofourpeoplemustbarometrically riseorfallaccordingtotheirfealty orapathytothedogmasofChristianity.Thenation,asaellasthe individualowesatripleallegianceto theAluniehty.AstheCreatorofitsintelligence,itisboundtoknowHim; astheCreatorofitswillitisbound toloveHim;andinvirtueofthe factthatallitspowerscomefrom AlmightyGod,itisboundtoobey Hislaws.Anationcannotignore thesefacts,andsecurelystand.Yet, theseprincipleshavepracticallylittleornoplaceintheprogrammeof thatgreatmajorityofourpeople whoareoutsidethefoldoftheCatholicChurch.Andasthismajority playsabigpartindirectingthe destiniesofourrace,evilmust surelyconic.

Now,itisforusAustralianstosee whitherwearedrifting.Atrueeducationisthecorner-stoneofagreat People.Withoutreligionemaedmled deepinthelivingheartsofthepeople-soembeddedthatItplaysa dominantpartindeterminingthe conductoftheirlives-youmaycall thepresentsystembyanynameyou wish,butyoucannotreasonablycall iteducation.Thesoulisasfarsuperiortothebodyasheavenisabove earth.Deprivedofarationalscul, thebodyisapoorandpitifulorganism.AsShakespearesays It isthemindthatmakesthebody rich."Toinstalthebody,then,with itsstormypassionsinprideofplace wouldhetomisstheveryaimof humanlife,andtomis-directhuman effort.Andthatistheindictment thoseresponsibleforthefutureof youngAustraliamaybecalledto

MereKnowledgeNotSufficient

Therearetobefoundinourmidst so-callededucationistswhorejectreligioustraininginourschools,and pretendefficaciouslytosupplement suchtrainingbysystemsofnaturalismwhichhavesuccumbedtothe pressureofexperimentthousandsof yearsago.Accordingtotheirnotions,tobuild'upavirileandpushfulrace,itisexpedienttoinvest ourschoolchildrenwithpurelynaturalmeanstothatend.Maintainingthatknowledgeispower,they averthattorevealtoourboysand girlsthesecretsofsex-physiology wouldbetoplaceundertheircontrol aslashingweaponagainsttheonslaughtofmoraldegeneracy.They overlookattheoutsettheduplexnatureofknowledge;andforgetthat theknowledgeofgoodislesspotent tocontractthantheknowledgeofevilisstrongtodestroy.Nordotheyreckonthatitis anevilandabitterthingtoglut

Teachingsofsuchtexturewovenintothemindandheartofa-icing generationmustinevitablymilitate againstthelastingwelfareofthe Australiannation.Evenintheirattempttoreducetheirtheorisingto practicetheyerragainsttheinborn, naturalrightoftheindividualfreely tocaterforhislawfulinclinations.

Thatthereisonlyonegenuine fore,ofChristianity,andthatthat isnoneotherthanthemuch-abused CatholicChurch,isathesisevident toanymanwhoapproachesitwith anunbiassedmind.ThattheCatholicChurchistheleavenoftheAustraliannation,factsgoalongway to!wove.Thatthemultitudinous, antieverincreasing,Christiansects donotcarryconsistencybeyondthe regionofexpediency,isaproposition thatwillnoteasilyhearthetentof examination.Theyaregoingwitha vengeance-rushingdownthebroad streamofprivatejudgmentthat peersitselfintothewideseaofreligiousindifference.

ReligionandTrueEducation

Inseparable

If,then,Australiaistobecomea greatnation,asystemwhichwillefficacionfeymilitateagainstitscurrentdefectsmustbeadopted.Such asystemisnen-existentwitheutthe foldsoftheCatholicChurch,which now,asever,istheonlygenuine foreofChristianity.Catholiceducationistheonlyeducationelsystee,whichwillthoroughlyeluip mankindforthebattleofthefuture.

Bearingthatfactinwind.itisour boerelentelt,/ascatholicstosupportCatholiceducation.Catholics haveatnetimebelievedthatreligioncouldbebanishedfrom,theschool withimpunity.DefierinaGodmust evercontinuetohethecentralcoordinatingelementinthechild'slife.

SpeakingattheopeningofSt.Joseph's.Convent,Ozeriond,Dr.Mannix, onthequestionofreligiouseducation,interalia,remarked:-"Forty yearsofthesecularsystemhaddone theirwork,andtheProtestantsects hadtocomplain-andthecomplaint broughtnocenueolationtoCatholics -thattheirchurcheswereempty,or poorlyattended,andthatthemassesoftheirpeopleweregrowingup withoutreligion.'Henceitwasthat, afterfortyyears,theyheardsomuch abouttheBibleintheschools.Itis amazinghowpeoplecouldcomfort themselveswithacatchcry.Butthey shouldheverysanguine,orveryfoolish,whowouldhopetorestorereligiontothenon-Catholichomesof AustraliabyputtingcertaincolourlessextractsfromtheBibleintothe handsofStateschoolteachers,who werealreadyoverworked,perhaps, andwhomightbethemselvesCatholics,Protestants,Jews,unbelievers. "llysonClyde,"saysMrs.Harmon,"trodonarustynail,which penetratedhisheel,andcameout throughtheankle.Itwasaterrible wound,andtomakemattersworse, blood-poisonsetin.Thepainwas dreadful,fortheinflammationincreaseddaily,andthewoundcontinually discharged.Clydewasunabletoput hisfoottotheground,andhadto hecarriedabout,while,onaccount oftheintensepain,hecouldnotsleep atnight.

"Wetriedagreatnumberofdifferentointmentsandpowderswithout anysuccess,fortheinjurycontinued totakethewrongway.Wethen tookClydetoSydneyHospital,but thetreatmenttheremadehimcry fromtheexcessivepain.Ilewasin suchabadwaythatwehadtotake himeverymorningfortwomonths, buthewasnobetterattheendof thattime.Atlastwethoughtthe footwouldhavetoberemoved.

"Formonthsthechildsuffereduntoldmisery,andthenhisgrandmo-therdecidedtotrywhatZam-Buk woulddo.Shedressedthewound withsome,andthelittlefellowobtainedsomucheasethatwedeterminedtofollowupthetreatment.A furthersupplywaspurchasedand thetreatmentcontinued.Zam-Buk drewoutallthebadmatterandreducedtheswellingandinflammation."

Thefactis,thatduringthelatter partofthisdialogue,theworthy excisemanobservedthecautiousdistanceatwhichtheboykepthimself fromthegraspofhimandhiscompanion.Asuspicionconsequentlybegantodawnuponhim,that,in(12fianceofappearances,theladhimselfmighthetheactualsmuggler. Onreconsideringthematter,this suspicionalmostamountedtocertaintythetiniewastooshortto permiteventhemostingeniouscheat torenderhimselfandhiskeginvisibleinamannersoutterlyunaccountable.Ontheotherhand,when hereflectedontheopen,artlesscharacteroftheboy'ssong;thecapriciouschangetoalight-heartedwhistle,thesurprisesonaturally,and therespectsodeferentiallyexpressed, joinedtothedissimilarityofdress, hewasconfoundedagain,andscarcelyknewonwhichsidetodetermine.
