An experience not to be missed with two shows at 1pm and 5pm. Tickets are: Adult £16.50, Child £14.50. Visit www.kingslynncornexchange.co.uk to book now or call the Box Office on 01553 764864.

The curly tailed and woolly classmates joined the school ranks so that the children could study farming and a tractor was also brought on site. 'We can read books – and we love books here at Brington – and we can watch videos, but nothing beats living the experience,' explained head teacher Mark Farrell. The pigs and sheep were loaned to the primary school by local farmers, and Mr Farrell added: 'We are hoping to use our farming experience and get more animals in the future. The children have lots of suggestions about which types of animals to get!'

From Dunbar to Durham: An Archaeological Mystery A touring exhibit in association with Durham University is on display which reveals the human story behind the Civil Wars of the mid-1600s, and how a specialist team solved the mystery of two mass graves discovered in Durham. Following the excavations in Palace Green in November 2013, historic and scientific analysis examined how the skeletons were laid out compared to other mass graves in Europe. Bioarchaeologists and scientists then examined the remains to find out how old the men were, where they were from, the diseases and nutritional deficiencies they may have had in their lifetime.

A fascinating archaeological detective story is being told in a new exhibition at The Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon.

In September 2015 the project team concluded that 'the only plausible' explanation was that the skeletons were those of Scottish soldiers captured by Parliamentarian forces following their defeat by Oliver Cromwell at the Battle of Dunbar in September 1650, and then taken to Durham. The display explores the story behind the men and what was revealed about their lives and deaths by the archaeology. Objects from the Museum’s collections will also be used to bring the story of this battle to life.

The exhibition is on display until Sunday 11 September during normal museum opening hours; admission’s free. Find out more about this and a supporting programme of events on the Cromwell Museum’s website at: www.cromwellmuseum.org 6

Top Tips for Planning your Child’s Birthday Party Hassle-free Party planning can be a minefield - and kids party planning even more so! Should you invite the whole class? Do you have to cater for parents? How much should you spend on the goody bag? The list goes on and on... Party planning etiquette expert Lisa Forde, of leading stationery shop, Dotty About Paper, answers some of the top questions all parents want to know:

siblings and you’re only inviting one parent, you need to make this clear on your invitations.’

B Should you invite the whole class? ‘You’re not obligated to invite the entire classroom if that doesn’t work for your family,’ explains Lisa.

‘Goody bags aren’t a necessity, but some children will be expecting them if they are used to receiving them at other parties,’ Lisa explains.

‘But bear in mind it would be unfair to invite nearly the whole class and miss a couple of children out so maybe stick to less than 10 and hand out your party invitations to parents discreetly.’

‘They are also a great way of signalling that the party is at an end. If the budget does not cover goody bags, the most important thing is a thank you card.’

‘It is always awkward telling off someone else’s child for their behaviour, but as the host, you are within your rights to take an unruly child gently to one side and ask them to calm down.

C Should you invite siblings, and do you have to cater for parents?

Metal Detectorists – Become a Treasure Hunter! Explore the hobby that’s engaging more families outdoors. Have you ever thought about what lies beneath our feet? It’s an exciting prospect and if you’ve got a youngster with a passion for the great outdoors and a keen interest in history, then maybe metal detecting could be the hobby for them.

‘There are plenty of online resources too – both free and ones you can subscribe to, such as Digital Documents – which can be used to help identify them. But anything thought to be over 300 years old must be reported to the local Finds Liaisons Officer as it could potentially be classed as Treasure Trove and therefore subject to an inquest.

It’s a fun activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family – and who knows what treasure might turn up? Mark Coles, from Holbeach, who runs the Detectorists Metal Detecting Club, says newcomers should acquaint themselves with the Metal Detectors Code of Conduct, which outlines important information about where you can and can’t go and what happens if you find something that could be of significant importance.

‘Once you get going, metal detecting really is a great hobby for all ages to enjoy – it gets you out in the fresh air, you get to see all kinds of nature in the countryside, the walking is good exercise and it’s a great way to learn about the history of your local area.’

‘All metal detectorists must have the landowner’s permission before they start,’ says Mark. ‘Then there are other things like respecting the countryside and closing gates, respecting animals if you’re on a livestock farm, all common-sense things.’

Medieval gold stirrup ring recently found in Lincolnshire

When it comes to equipment the main thing you will need is a good metal detector. Mark says there are many models, with prices for a good piece of equipment starting from around £500, although smaller, cheaper detectors more suitable for children are also available. He advises to look out for quality second-hand detectors, too, which cost considerably less and also suggests equipping yourself with a small trowel for digging up your finds, something to put them in and sturdy footwear.

He adds: ‘There are all sorts of things waiting to be found out there; coins, buttons, brooches and other artefacts are all common around [Lincolnshire] from both the Roman and medieval periods.

Visit www.ncmd.co.uk for more information about metal detecting and to read the code of conduct in full. Youngsters are welcome to join The Detectorist Metal Detecting Club as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Visit www.thedetectorists.net for more information. 12

Hot Hoops Basketball offers huge benefits both physically and mentally for children. Find out why this hot hobby is worth a try.

After the release of Space Jam: A New Legacy last year, it’s no surprise that basketball has spiked in popularity with Looney Tune-loving children. While some are happy to take aim at a hoop above their garage, those who were inspired by the moves of LeBron and Dominic James to take the game more seriously can develop their skills at several, allability clubs across our region. The fast-paced game, which increases agility, athleticism and endurance, hones skills that are transferable to other sports such as footwork and hand-eye coordination.

Most basketball clubs offer weekly sessions for all abilities from ages 8 – 16 years and promote a positive culture, such as antibullying and appropriate communication. 'Basketball teaches children social skills and how to be a team player alongside learning how to communicate and cooperate with others on the court,' says Jordane Edwards-Maddock, manager at Stamford Junior Knights. 'Exercise is so important to promote good mental health, too, and basketball provides the opportunity for children to switch off,' she adds.

Let's Celebrate In June we’re all getting ready for a right royal knees-up as we celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

This historic event marks the fact that Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. Whether it’s street parties, concerts, tea parties or community events we’re all being encouraged to join in from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June when we get to enjoy two days off and a weekend of fun. It’s an ideal opportunity for the children to play their part making, baking and decorating. Places like Hobbycraft have a great range of craft materials for the Jubilee and their website includes crafting tips and ideas as well as the chance to book into workshops, visit www.hobbycraft.co.uk/platinum-jubilee The Big Jubilee Lunch will be taking place on Sunday 5 June encouraging communities to celebrate their connections and get to know each other a little better. But if there’s not an event near you why not hold your own at home and invite the neighbours round. There are plenty of free templates online to create your own bunting, or why not keep the kids busy with your very own bake-off to create some Jubilee cupcakes, or try something like these biscuits www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/bunting-biscuits

CRESSET JUBILEE PERFORMING ARTS PROJECT

There are many events taking place and you can find out more about what’s happening near you at www.platinumjubilee.gov.uk/events/

To celebrate the Platinum Jubilee The Cresset are running a competition for primary school children from across Peterborough to present an important moment in The Queen’s life through the medium of performing arts in a new project entitled, Our Queen’s Story.

JUBILEE JOY AT QUEENSGATE Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough is staging a three-day free festival of fun to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. On Tuesday 31 May, a giant 6ft card will be put up in the centre for everyone to add a personal message of congratulations to Her Majesty. Queensgate will then send the card to The Queen as a gift from the people of Peterborough. On Wednesday 1 June, make a majestic memory for Her Majesty. There’ll be giant props and photo ops, face painters as well as free crafts and letter writing.

The Cresset’s thriving Performing Arts programme is dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities to explore their individuality and celebrate their talents. This latest project, supported by Peterborough Reads and the National Literacy Trust is free to take part in as it’s supported by The Cresset’s Performing Arts Development Programme. Schools and groups can choose the story or event they wish to present and it can be told through any form of performing arts – poems, monologues, acting, mime, song, dance, a radio announcement, news broadcast or even puppetry! Presentations can be performed by individuals or whole classes and each school can enter up to seven presentations but they must be in by 1 June.

The final day ends with a ‘bang-quet’. On Thursday 2 June, it’s time for tea and a dance! A giant teacup and bunting make for a great family photo opportunity while tea is poured to toast our favourite monarch. Grab a partner and learn the ‘two step’ at this fun day for all.

They will be displayed on The Cresset website for viewing leading up to the Jubilee weekend, with seven winners being chosen and displayed at a showcase exhibition in The Cresset over the summer. Schools interested in taking part can register for an information pack here: www.cresset.co.uk/performing-arts

The three-day event is free for all to attend and will be located in Central Square from 11am to 3pm. www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk

KIP MCGRATH PROMOTION

Parents and Students give Kip McGrath Top Marks Not all children learn at the same pace and some benefit more from a little one-to-one tuition if they’re struggling in a classroom environment. Anxiety about learning can make things worse so that’s where Kip McGrath comes in, helping your child with a much more personalised approach to ease any nerves and help them progress. Qualified teachers offer tailored learning programmes in English and maths, and it seems parents and students using the service can’t recommend it highly enough. Here’s what some of them have to say: 'Cannot praise the team at Kip enough, especially Gill and Peter. Since my son has been coming all his marks have gone up in school and he is a lot more confident too. Thank you so very much.' SL (parent) 'I love coming here. Gill is the best! I have got so much better in my maths and English.' Q (student) 'I would have no hesitation in recommending the centre to any parent. Warm welcoming environment with a dedicated team of tutors. My daughter enjoys attending weekly and her confidence in maths is growing. Well done Gill and team, keep up the good work.' LS (parent)

Kip McGrath is based in Peterborough and runs sessions at their two centres or online. To find out more and book a free assessment visit www.kipmcgrath.co.uk/book-assessment

'Thank you very much for all your help and support and always encouraging me whenever I used to get anxious. At this moment I feel happy and sad - happy because my maths has really improved and my exams are over, but at the same time I feel really sad that I will be leaving Kip McGrath. It’s been a pleasure coming here for a year, and meeting you and Becky.' M (student) 'Best decision! I would recommend Kip McGrath to anyone whose child needs help with maths, English or just to improve a child’s knowledge. I would like to thank everyone at the centre, they are doing an amazing job.' SM (parent)

'I wanted to give my son a boost as he struggles to engage with learning in a busy classroom environment and I felt a focused session would benefit him. He has really engaged with the programme, personalised to his needs and structured to focus on his areas of development. The tutors are friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. Gill is extremely learner centred and has created a learning environment with a nurturing ethos. I recommend this setting wholeheartedly to support your child’s learning.' HD (parent) 'Thank you for helping me with the King’s exam. I really appreciate it. ' F (student)
