Thus, the elderly Scottish nanny Mrs Euphegenia Doubtfire is born.

Find children's theatre at Perform in the Park

Children’s drama school Perform is embarking on its first ever children’s theatre festival this summer in Coram’s Fields, Bloomsbury. The six-week festival includes four musicals, two of which are original, with shows running daily from July 22 to August 28.

The line-up includes The Three Billy Goats Gruff, a musical adventure for 2-6 year olds. For 3-8 year olds, there is Elephant and Piggie’s We are in a Play! based on Mo Willems’ books. Perform’s brand-new Caribbean adventure Mermaids & Pirates is for ages 4-11. Finally, for ages 7-14, another original show from Perform, The Dream, reboots Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for a new generation.

As well as these four fantastic musicals for children aged 2-14, which are under cover, there are evening events for teens, a charming all-day café and all the usual child-centred delights of Coram's Fields.

Use unwanted felt tips to help others

A bucketful of promise: tools to spark creativity

A mum in North London has become the London ambassador for a charitable initiative after looking for a way to involve her children in helping others directly.

"Heart Felt Tips enables children to help less fortunate children — empowering both for the future," said Alia Bokhary, from Camden.

The initiative was started by artist Jeremy Houghton. It organises for children suffering economic hardship to receive pencil cases packed with pens and other creative tools that they often lack. The pencil cases are donated by Versapak International Ltd, who recycle their surplus material to make new pencil cases. They are filled by children at schools and clubs, then distributed via frontline food banks, children’s charities and hospitals, and faith centres. Alia said: "We filled our first pencil cases with almost new stationery sitting in our drawers. We loved the exercise and my kids were taught so many fantastic lessons – that some

children in our community don’t have things that they take for granted, that recycling and reducing waste is useful and satisfying in more than one way – and that amazing things can be done when we decide to take action."

"My daughter’s school recently took part and I am very grateful," said Alia. The 260 pencil cases are now being distributed to local children

"It's a brilliantly simple and effective initiative. I’d like to encourage families, schools and clubs to take part."

Test to prevent deafness

A test being trialled by NHS hospitals, could save the hearing of 200 babies a year. Gentamicin, a common emergency antibiotic, is used to safely treat about 100,000 babies a year but one in 500 carry a gene change that can lead to permanent hearing loss when given it. The cheek swab test can identify, in less than half an hour, whether a baby carries the gene and needs an alternative.

Nature primary breaks new ground

An exciting new primary school –inspired by outdoor nurseries – is opening its doors this September.

"Most of the children’s time will be spent outdoors in nature following Forest School principles," said Tara Royle, co-founder of Wildwood Nature School, Dartmouth Park.

"The National Curriculum has been woven into an enriched, child-led, project-based curriculum where children can follow their curiosity and be empowered to make choices about what and how they want to learn.

"As a teacher, I could see that there was a different way to educate children. One where each child’s uniqueness could be respected, and they could move, play and be free, rather than sit at tables indoors all day. When I became a parent, I realised I needed to create this kind of school for my son, as it simply didn’t exist."

Tara partnered with Emma Shaw and Steve Tromans of Into The Woods Outdoor Nurseries to build this new approach to education. It will be a tiny school, starting

with 20 children, and a maximum of 40 after five years, with ratios of one adult to five children and a key person system. "This is so that children can develop deep, compassionate relationships with their adults so that they feel known and safe, and learning is supported and challenged," added Tara.

The school’s behaviour policy diverges from most schools. Instead of reward and punishment, Wildwood teaches children about emotions, bodily sensations, trauma and mindfulness as well as nonviolent communication and restorative justice, and sees all behaviour as an expression of an unmet need. When children express stressed behaviour, adults work with the child to determine the unmet need and solve issues within the context of their relationship and the school community.

Wildwood is committed to creating equity, added Tara. The school is offering 20-30 per cent of its places for free, and the rest are offered on a sliding scale of fees based on means testing.

When we have non-stop days, it’s easy to lapse into "one-way-street parenting". That’s where, as the more powerful grown-up, you tell your child how to behave. But parenting becomes so much easier when it’s a two-way transaction and you make a conscious effort to listen to what your child has to say as well.

As they grow, children are in a constant process of learning to recognise and describe their needs and emotions. However, with their developing vocabulary they can’t always clearly articulate their big feelings so they don’t always feel heard. Children who don’t feel heard often act out how they feel. There could be angry tantrums, strops, defiance or attention-seeking behaviour to force you to pay attention. Sadly, this behaviour has the opposite effect.

The good news is that just one simple shift can transform your relationship with your child. Next time your child explodes, understand they are struggling with giant feelings. Rather than thinking about how to discipline them, observe their behaviour with curiosity, followed by empathy.

For example, we grown-ups tend to hear repeated requests for the things kids want as whingeing or nagging.

Rather than ignoring them, show them you heard them the first time by looking at them, getting down on their level if they are still little, repeating what they have just said and giving them a response that works in that moment, even if it’s an explanation for why you are saying "no".

Of course, you can’t be expected to drop everything, every time or give kids whatever they want.

Keep some phrases in your back pocket like: "I know it’s hard to wait. I’ll be there soon," or "I heard you calling me. Give me five minutes while you finish your Lego house." Even if it’s not the answer they want to hear, they will ease off once they know the message has got through. Just make sure you stick to your word. This kind of listening is not about giving in or letting them have their own way. It’s about remembering that children are on a steep learning curve, towards naming and managing feelings, that continues well into teenage years.
