TO ROSKILDE FESTIVAL 2018

Yes, welcome indeed! You having cracked open this booklet means that you are at Roskilde Festival 2018. It’s a joyous place. Heavenly! But we don’t need to tell you that. You already know – or you will definitely soon find out. One part of what makes Roskilde Festival such a haven is the many-coloured music, the mindboggling arts, the mouth-wateringly delicious food, the eye-opening talks and debates and in general... well, the good times.

Everything is possible in the big city called Roskilde Festival. This is where we can dream a little. Forget about the tiresome troubles on blue Mondays or wet Wednesdays. Here, we can contemplate how we live our lives, and perhaps bring inspiration from what Roskilde Festival facilitates back with us into our busy everyday schedules. Mix it up a bit.

The other part is you, our favourite people in the world! The Roskilde people! You give Roskilde Festival atmosphere, you bring the high spirits and good moods, you become the best audience in the world, together at Roskilde Festival.

This year, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our orange altar (see a little celebration on p. 15). The Orange Stage was first set up back in 1978, the same year Bob Marley & The Wailers played here. Since then, it has been a platform for numerous stars. This year is no exception, and Orange Stage is just one of eight stages, which again just are a few of all the venues, places, corners, squares and hideaways you will find here. So much is going on.

Roskilde Festival becomes the special place it is because of the free space we have together. Because we appreciate and respect one another. Together, we make everybody have a good time. It’s our common responsibility. In other words, to sum everything up, we are orange together.

But enough talk (at least on this page). Go explore, go have the best time of your life and remember to hug a stranger and talk to all your new friends here you haven’t met yet. But also, read onwards in this guide, which will tell you about some of the many things you have ahead of you at Roskilde 2018. Enjoy!

NEWS AT # RF18

MUSIC, ART AND ACTIVISM MERGE

Music, art and activism merge more than ever before at Roskilde Festival 2018. This year we’re upgrading KlubRÅ, a club that offers live music, art projects and everything in between. Our own modern community hall, Flokkr, is filled with talks, debates and music. Moreover, a few art and activism projects will move onto our music stages, e.g. political activist Chelsea Manning and Danish artist HVAD. On our screens by the Orange Stage you can watch art flicks. It all blends together, and there is plenty to explore. Have fun!

MAKEOVER FOR ORANGE AREA

We’ve redesigned the audience area in front of the Orange Stage. We’ve added more delay speakers to fill the area with crisp and clear sound. At the back, we’ve removed the grandstand in favour of a new hang-out area. This also ties the area better together with Trade Zone. At the front we have changed the pit system. The two sections at the back (capacity: 10,000 people) are now always open. Access to the front section closest to the stage requires special pit wristbands. Get them on the day of the concert. Read more on page 99.

THE CITIES ARE DEVELOPING

Prepare for better sound coverage in the orange stage area: Five speaker towers (two more in 2018) will fill the area with sound.

This year we have three cities – East, West and South – central areas on the campsite full of activities, music, and food and drink options. East City comes alive in 2018! Here you can visit our 3GAME area for your daily dose of street sports (basketball, petanque, street football, volleyball and much more) and DJs at night, as well as our Equality Stadium for a match of unfair football. This is also where you will find Flokkr, our festivalised community hall, with three days of talks, debates and workshops.

West City has moved up to the northwestern corner of the campsite. It contains the Rising stage, which is one of two stages for upcoming music. The other stage for upcoming music, Countdown, is in South City. This is a great place to hang out. This is also where we have our festival supermarket. No need to leave – we’ve got you sorted right here.

MORE FOOD THAN EVER

Feeling hungry? We have more dishes to satisfy your needs than ever before, no matter which type of food you’re craving right now. 130 food stalls offer over 400 dishes. Make sure you catch some music between all those meals, mmkay?

ROSKILDE FESTIVAL BECOMES 100 % CASHLESS

More or less everybody at Roskilde Festival uses a payment card of sorts, and that’s the only form of payment we accept at Roskilde Festival. If you’re a refund collector, you can get a Refund Card and collect your money in cash at a Refund Payout Station located in area L. Other than that, we’re 100 % cashless.

960 FLUSHING TOILETS AT THE CAMPSITE

This year the campsite is full of flushing toilets. 960 of them, to be exact! This means that you don’t have to walk far to find the nearest one when nature calls. The underground system consists of 30 kilometres of pipes. In total, we have over 3,100 publicly available toilets and pissoirs throughout the festival area.

In a new digital era with a much-needed focus on personal data on the internet, we want to be fully transparent about what we do with the data we have on you. Below you can see some examples of how we handle data. When you buy a ticket, we get to know your name, phone number, address and your email address. We appreciate that info because it tells us something about where in the world our audience is from. Furthermore, we can send you practical information and updates. When you use our app, a tracking code gives us information about the usage. It also shows us where the users are located on the festival site, allowing us to send push messages to users in a certain area. We do this for safety reasons. We can evaluate on audience flows for future festivals, predict audience attendance and communicate on safety precautions based on your location. Another reason is enhancing your experience. We can suggest experiences such as art and food options close to your location. All users are anonymous. We don’t know who you are, and we don’t want to know. When we shoot photos and video at the festival, you might end up being in the recordings. If you’re the focal point of the content, we will always ask your approval to use the content. You may also be in some photos alongside a lot of other happy festival-goers. When that happens we’re not able to ask for everybody’s approval. If you prefer that we remove the content, just let us know at gdpr@roskilde-festival.dk.

When you post an image on Instagram and tag it #rf18 we may show it on our big screens by the Orange and Arena stages. We do a screening of the photos first and we prefer happy faces and cheerful moments. If you prefer to stay off the screen, you can make your posts private, avoid using #rf18, or just let us know and we will leave you out. See e-mail above. When you buy stuff at the festival, be it beer or silly hats, we don’t record any personal data. We’ve heard one critical voice say that we could in fact trace everybody personally based on their purchases. Let’s be straight about this. We can’t, and most importantly, we won’t! At Roskilde you’re free. We simply make it possible for you to pay for stuff you’d like to buy, just like shops do. There’s more, of course, and we’ve laid it all out for you if you’re interested. ABOUT SEX

Roskilde is a free space. A free space where we can be curious and explore ourselves and each other. Here is wildness, joy of life, curiosity and sensuality. Life-defining concerts, hedonistic mackerelin-tomato-stricken camp parties, greasy festival food, dusty hook-ups, balancing acts while peeing in the fence and sweaty festival sex on tired air mattresses. So many possibilities and experiences. Of course, in such a free space there are many grey areas. Situations where you are unsure if everything is fantastic or too much. If somebody said yes or no, jumped on or backed out. Situations where your own curiosity or desire suspends the consideration for another person. Where you forget to ask and do not make it possible to say no. Or where you completely forget to listen. Grey areas where we risk hurting or violating each other. We must help each other avoid this. Under the heading “Orange Together” we focus on all the conversations and situations where it can be difficult to say yes and no.

We have developed a card game that explores just how (not) exciting it is to be cat-called when you are peeing, the best way to seduce the beautiful girl from the neighbouring camp, if festival sex is sizzlingly hot or straight-out disgusting and if it is easier to pick up people that you have first rated with signs as they pass by. We have developed this game with our collaborators The Danish Family Planning Organisation, The Danish Women’s Society, The Askov Foundation, Amnesty International, DareGender and Everyday Sexism Project – and their volunteers whom you will meet during the first days of the festival. They will visit camps and play the game with you. If you pay Bastard Café a visit in Dream City, you can also try the game there. We hope that the game will make it a little easier for us all to talk about and navigate in the grey areas that appear when the intoxication, senses and emotions accelerate upwards.

DEAR ORANGE STAGE!

How old should we tell everybody that you are this year? We don’t think anyone will believe that you’re turning 35 for the fifth year in a row. Happy 40th birthday! We can’t believe that it’s been so long since the newspapers first wrote about a mystical orangered dragon tent on the festival site in Roskilde in 1978. You may not remember, but you were originally called ‘The Orange One’. Your father was the British stage designer Bill Harkin. Before you were a stage you were an idea, and then a design, which landed in the hands of The Rolling Stones’ tour manager. You were built in 1976 for the British band’s European tour that same year. Why orange, you probably ask. To tell you the truth, Harkin said it was because the orange canvas was on sale. But he also admitted that it was a cool colour for a rock’n’roll tent. We think we all can agree on that! Your orange colour gave an identity to Roskilde Festival. Think about that for a minute!

You had your debut at Roskilde Festival in 1978. And what a splash! 30,000 people visited that year (a new record!), and they witnessed Bob Marley’s flailing dreadlocks and Rasta man vibrations as well as Elvis Costello’s neurotic and vengeful rock. Back then you were called ‘The Canopy Stage’. This was perhaps the moment when Roskilde Festival really found itself. In your presence! In 1984, your canvas needed to be replaced. It was worn down. The same thing happened in 2001 when we also got you a brand-new construction, 33 % larger than the original. And you’re still standing there. Proudly, as the central beacon of the festival. Throughout the years you have come to symbolise lifeblood and community. In 2018, you stand there again, and we can celebrate your birthday with Eminem, Bruno Mars, Gorillaz and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as some of the prominent guests at your party. We’re looking forward to the next 40 years in your glorious company. Let’s raise our glasses...

Ten-meter-tall walls pile up like a border fence at the festival, an anti-capitalist giant snake slithers through the campsites while limousines drive around and pick up the lucky ones. The art at Roskilde Festival relates to the world and wants you to do the same. The projects explore what it means to be a human being today. Political, digital and climate changes have created a world with a heightened fear of the unknown and an increased pressure on communities. What’s going on in this mad world? There’s plenty to discuss and talk about. Enter Flokkr, our festivalized community centre for all festival-goers who are curious about the many ways we can challenge how we think of our society. Join in on debates, talks and performances. In 2018, Flokkr will present an array of different events and happenings, many of which are part of our general focus on economic equality.

Flokkr is an Old Norse word for gathering place? Flokkr is in some way a tribute to the court of the vikings where they discussed challenges and complex matters. So do we in the year of 2018.

Help make a large-scale inflatable serpent. The Serpent of Capitalism is a re-imagining of our world if it were free of the stranglehold of capitalism. When produced, the serpent will roam the Roskilde campsite, but before that can happen we need you to lend your hand in the construction of this beast.

WHAT IS MONEY?

What exactly is money? The system is not necessarily transparent and democratic in its design. New crypto economies go other ways and establish their own systems. Among others, you can meet Jonas Jensen from Gode Penge and Julia Evelyn Larsen from CryptoWomen. Moderator is Hakon Mosbech.

ARE THE ROBOTS COMING?

Join in on a debate about future labour. A workplace is no longer physical but more of a ubiquitous thing, for good and bad. What does that mean for organisations on the labour market and ourselves as workers? And, frankly, are the robots coming? Moderator is Christiane Vejlø.

GENDER IN DANISH URBAN MUSIC

Is urban music something for everyone or only for the chosen few? Urban music dominates the charts. Is this fact an indication of a big scene for recording and performing artists or is it just a handful of people that get to climb the charts? And how are opportunities for female artists in this genre? Presented by Turning Tables

THE FUTURE FOR GREENLANDIC MUSIC

Is there an interest in traditional Greenlandic music and culture patterns or is it rather influences from the surrounding world that dominate? In collaboration with young voices from Greenland, PIP (association for culture and youth in Greenland) and The Danish Red Cross Youth, we start a debate. Presented by Turning Tables

PRIVILEGES

What can we do to pass some of our privileges on to those who experience inequality the most? Mino Denmark is actively working for a community of committed and equal minority citizens, and they host a debate. Look forward to meeting Sara Omar, Shaka Loveless and Nabiha. ARE YOU CORRUPT?

Towards a greener, cleaner festival Last year, Roskilde Festival gathered 2,280 tons of waste. This makes responsible waste management a priority for the festival—and for DTU, Technical University of Denmark. Engineering students from DTU are doing their part in making Roskilde Festival more sustainable by finding new ways to reduce, sort, and recycle waste.

Since 2010 DTU and Roskilde Festival have collaborated on improving festival conditions. This year, you can experience a portable windmill, Food Court powered by seven electric cars, a paper pavilion, and a beer pong game training a neural network. Drop by DTU’s TechLab between Avalon and Orange Stage.

Bookworms, come closer! Forfatterskabet is the literary stage for publishers Rosinante & Co and Gyldendal at Roskilde Festival. Between 1 July and 3 July, you can listen to and engage in discussions with contemporary Danish authors. You can meet: Lone Aburas, Peder Frederik Jensen, Athena Farrokhzad, Ursula Andkjær Olsen, Kaspar Colling Nielsen, Lars Skinnebach, Peter Adolphsen, Theis Ørntoft, Rasmus Halling Nielsen and Tine Høeg. RADIO CINEMA: GRÆNSELAND

COMIC BEAT

TALK AND CONCERT Comic Beat feat. SPEkTR The band SPEkTR will play a live soundtrack for the graphic novel Dansker, Halfdan Pisket’s story about life as an immigrant. Students from The Animation Workshop in Viborg have created an animation film from Pisket’s graphic sketches as a scenography for the music. Presented by Roskilde Library

Danish newspaper Information has done a series about sexual boundaries, in which men openly and honestly talk about their experiences with sexual boundaries and grey areas. In this radio cinema we listen to mens’ stories. Afterwards, you can meet the people behind for a talk about gender, sex and boundaries. Presented by Information

GOD GOES DEEP

God Goes Deep is all about ambiance and rhythms. Their four-hour performance is a relaxing alternative to the campsite’s hustle and bustle. The DJs are Palmalova, Ena Cosovic and Mama Snake (Apeiron Crew). God Goes Deep also performs at KlubRÅ.

Biology professor Hans Henrik Bruun argues that we are scared about biodiversity. What do we know about the natural diversity of snails, ferns and mushrooms? Is access to and protection of nature a luxury reserved for rich societies? Or is the diversity of species better in Romania and Rwanda than here? Moderator is Svante Lindeburg. Presented by the nature and science festival Bloom

ART ZONE ±MAISMENOS± PT

Portuguese street artist ±MAISMENOS± makes intervention art. His projects offer a critical reflection on the model of political, social and economic organisation that manages contemporary urban societies. At Roskilde Festival he will create a mural focusing on economic equality.

BANKSLAVE KE

Bankslave is the founding father of graffiti in Kenya. With colourful, witty and funky images, he addresses social, political and environmental issues affecting his community. Bankslave will paint a mural which reflects on current international politics and economic equality in the world today.

Many tools that were developed to simulate and analyse weather data are now also used to analyse data generated by human life in order to predict the economic and political future. The work Forecast uses digital weather vanes that are controlled by the public’s personal data instead of the wind.

The plastiglomerate is a new type of rock found in Hawaii in 2012. With a reconstruction of the stone, made from organic material and plastic, Veronika Geiger questions how we should relate to a man-made geological layer where time scales, materials and stories combine to form a whole new story. Collaboration with Bikuben and art consultant Christina Wilson.

SANO DK

Pathway leads you through Art Zone. It proposes new directions and detours and creates new spaces for relaxation. At night it is illuminated from below. The designers SANO work in the crossfield of architecture, handicraft and installation art, and Pathway moves between other works and art forms in Art Zone.

VIKTORIA WENDEL SKOUSEN DK

The installation Nocturnal Salon will form a portal which moths will crowd around. Viktoria Wendel Skousen brings a wall of suspended framed billboards into Art Zone. They are full of square silk fabric with UV light which illuminates the night.

Artist and musician Hari Shankar Kishore aka HVAD will give an audio-visual performance. HVAD’s show on Gloria is created live on stage, performed with a number of albums from Kommunal Dubplate Service, electronics and bowls as instruments.

Welcome to the body laboratory. Here, festivalgoers are confronted with two performers who repeat the same movements over and over as they work on the human production line.

The video project Tangible Extractions explores colonial mining of minerals and today’s data mining. The video shows a Greenlandic mine from which the minerals for computers are being extracted. Unlike the minerals in the earth, our data is easy to mine and convert to profit and political power.

ELSEWHERE AT THE FESTIVAL

For the screens at Orange Stage, this duo has created a music video with music by Wolf Eyes. I Spend Too Much Time Outside connects TV kitchens, talk shows and psychological dramas, all about human (over)consumption and the consequences of it.

DIESEL WORM INT by Paul Barsch & Tilman Hornig feat. Bruce Bickford, Lara Joy Evans, Micah Hesse, Rachel Maclean, Jeremy Shaw, Alexey Vanushkin, Anne De Vries, ­A ngharad Williams and Lu Yang The project Diesel Worm is a floating exhibition consisting of three limousines that will move through the festival campsite between 1 July and 3 July. The limos contain works by some of the world’s greatest artists but only few can get on board the diesel worms for a luxury trip, leaving the rest to feel inequality directly.

KIRSTEN ASTRUP DK

With a film piece, artist Kirsten Astrup looks at the history of the Danish railway as an image of a welfare society and a working culture undergoing change. The soundtrack is played out as a performance concert on the Gloria stage. The parade, consisting of performers and drag queens, starts on the train from Copenhagen to Roskilde Festival Train Station from where they will parade to Gloria.

MIKROFEST DK

Literature is alive and well. Mikrofest illustrates this in their reading performance. The name refers to the boom of micro publishers willing to publish experimental literature that challenges our understanding of language, the world and ourselves.

Baggaardsbaroner’s phone booth is actually a disguised micro library. You can enter the phone booth, lift the receiver and call up the most interesting books from the underground. All the books are read aloud by the authors themselves.

EQUALITY

EQUALITY Homelessness, corruption, migration and tax havens. Roskilde Festival 2018 turns the focus to economic equality and looks back on the three years of our Equality campaign. Did you know that the eight wealthiest persons in the world own the same as half of the world’s population combined? Did you know that 800 million people still live of less than 1.25 dollars a day? Or did you know that the richest man i Tanzania earns 122,000 times as much as the poorest? We look into how economic equality influences the opportunities we have to flourish and express ourselves, and be a part of a group or community. This year we have teamed up with organisations such as ActionAid, Hus Forbi, Transparency International Denmark and Oxfam IBIS. Also, several of the activities and art projects on the festival site are focused on economic equality. You can find out just how corrupt you really are or you can learn how to ululate. You can play for the riches of the world, listen to riveting debates or you can try the unfairness on your own body on a football pitch riddled with mines.

Keep your eyes peeled. Maybe the World Game will pass by your camp. Here you get to decide what the world should look like. You can harvest the planet’s resources to ensure the wealth and power you deserve to have. Or you can work towards a more equal distribution of resources. Every player starts with a country and a bag of gold. EQUALITY WALLS

Near Orange Stage you will encounter copies of various prototypes of the wall that Donald Trump plans to construct between the United States and Mexico. The walls, which originally had a nationalist agenda, will be included as aesthetic objects at Roskilde 2018. They seek to invite dialogue and to question a worldwide tendency to block borders and create greater inequality in a global world where technological development has long since dissolved boundaries between countries. Expect unannounced artistic actions by various artists at the walls.

Many of the activites are gathered at Equality Stadium. Equality Stadium challenges you to experience inequality on your own body on our inequal football pitch. The FIFA World Cup is taking place in Russia and the whole world is watching. DanChurchAid takes advantage of the increased attention and the momentum that football has this summer to focus on land mines and inequality. Football is played in all nations. But not all children and adults can run around freely and safely. Land mines don’t just kill people. They also impede access to resources and limit free movement, which keeps civilians trapped in poverty and increases inequality in the world.

KLUBRÅ KlubRÅ is Roskilde Festival’s unique fusion of art and music in collaboration with Tuborg. This year, KlubRÅ will be twice the size and full of performances, concerts, installations, poetry, DJ sets and much more.

Ena Cosovic is a Copenhagen-based DJ. A lover of records, she keeps on digging for melodies and textures. The core is techno with a touch of house and the occasional acid.

Adda Kaleh is Alexandra Pirici’s musical avatar. Music and technology meet in this concert installation where Pirici and two other performers, as well as video artist Ion Cotenescu, investigate what it means to be human in the encounter with music and alienating technological advances.

Astrid Sonne is a classically trained musician and composer who ventures into a complex, otherworldly realm of sound. She blends intense synth bass stabs, gripping melodies and rich textures. She’s an analogue-meets-digital hybrid with nods to the likes of Laurel Halo and Steve Reich.

BRYNJOLFUR FO

Brynjolfur made an early impact with his acidfuelled DJ sets and energetic remixes. The debut single “I Love You” (2013) broke the international barrier. He has since released a handful of stunning EPs. Expect dark, cosmic acid vibes when Brynjolfur takes the stage for an enticing DJ set.

DK

CTM bridges the classical world and modern experimental popular music, offering great musical experiences for fans of everything from jazz to experimental pop. Listening to CTM is a dive into uncharted waters, and it is music for the curious and adventurous-minded.

Faka’s performance connects the lack of affiliation for queers in Africa with the history of their ancestors. The work is a study of the body as a human being and the body as a host for the souls of the past, contributing to our complex long-term formation. Made especially for KlubRÅ.

FDM NATION: HITMAKERCHINX + DJ AARON US

Producers/DJs/dancers Hitmakerchinx and DJ Aaron are two of the most prominent figures in flexing, an offshoot of dancehall and reggae dance styles evolved in the Caribbean neighbourhoods of Brooklyn. They will perform with two of the scene’s standout dancers, Suzie Q and Hob Dot.

Juliana Huxtable has created an exclusive work for KlubRÅ. Poetry, music, lights and visuals are all part of a journey into a world of addiction, desire and pride between alien beings. A world of strange symbols, weird bodies, political landscapes and sci-fi.

Singer, composer and multi-artist Jenny Hval and multi-instrumentalist Håvard Volden’s new project is, according to the duo, “the sound of someone changing their mind.” Lost Girls deliver spoken words, deep rhythms and a general feeling of being out of place. Jenny Hval also does a reading.

LOTIC & RODERICK GEORGE US

The classically-trained dancer Roderick George and electronic musician Lotic explore the boundaries between ‘high’ and ‘pop’ culture. The piece Rebirth explores assigning certain dance genres to racial groups, set to Lotic’s metallic sounds.

MOONCHILD SANELLY ZA

Moonchild Sanelly describes her style as ghetto funk, a combination of music, fashion and dance. Fusing elements of experimental electronic, afropunk and edgy-pop with hints of her strong kwaito, hip-hop and jazz background, her sound and message are unique.

NILS GRÖNDAHL DK

Nils Gröndahl is a violinist and noisemaker. He is simply one man on the stage with his violin and many loop pedals. He builds up walls of sound and noise with his amplifiers. Some say he plays the violin as a guitar.

Having studied the rules of composition and been formally trained on saxophone, Xenia Xamanek is an artist who ignores all rules in her idiosyncratic style of music. She has released music under her alias Equis. Look forward to deconstructed techno, harsh noise and immersive ambient.

Yangze delivers a special brand of electro pop. His electronic past and current interest in avantgarde music are fused with a carefully sculpted type of earwormy pop. The Fader has called his sounds “perfect escape music”, so come along for a getaway.

Sandra Mujinga’s sculptures made from PVC, burnt acrylic paint and glycerine are based on sci-fi descriptions of aliens. When the underlying tissue degrades, their skin becomes thinner and the distinction between inner and outer body weakens, hence the title Atrophic Giants. Mujinga also DJ’s.

Severin is the solo project of Jens Konrad Barrett. Drifting between IDM, noise, punk and ambient, his significant style is both haunting and appealing. Safe Following Distance is the solo debut EP under his Severin moniker, which has received attention from various international media.

Troels Hass is a key figure on the Copenhagen electronic music scene. He is the owner of Percy Records, a record store in Copenhagen dedicated to electronic music. And he also keeps busy spinning music behind turntables and decks as a DJ.

“SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO PAY A HEAVY PRICE TO LIVE IN A FREE SOCIETY” CHELSEA MANNING TO GIVE EXCLUSIVE TALK

One of the last presidential acts of Barack Obama was to commute Chelsea Manning’s prison sentence. Chelsea Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013 for leaking classified documents related to the United States’ military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. She has told The New York Times that she disclosed the information out of love for her country and, perhaps in particular, a sense of duty to others. She has stated that “sometimes you have to pay a heavy price to live in a free society”.

Chelsea Manning has identified as a woman since her release, and is an active part of the fight for public transparency in a digitalised world, as well as transgender rights. She will give an exclusive talk about AI and ethics as well as activism on Thursday 5 July at Roskilde Festival. It will be her first European presentation since her sentence was commuted in 2017. Chelsea Manning has quite a dramatic personal story, which is both relevant and current in today’s world.

In Algorithms We Trust is a website where visitors are faced with a lot of personal questions they need to answer before they get the opportunity to ask a question to Chelsea Manning in relation with her talk at Roskilde Festival. The work highlights some of Chelsea Manning’s points in terms of the impact of technology on society. An algorithm determines who is considered credible enough to ask questions to Chelsea Manning. Do you feel comfortable in your own skin? How would you look if you were perceived from the outside through an abstracted filter? Would you look human... or perhaps alien? Prepare for a performance unlike anything else you’ll encounter at Roskilde Festival. Music and technology meet in this special concert installation where Romanian artist Alexandra Pirici’s musical avatar Adda Kaleh takes the stage at KlubRÅ. She’s equipped with a head rig with a motion-capture camera installed on it. The camera captures all her facial expressions and emotions, which are then fed to a machine for further interpretations (or should we say abstractions). The final result is projected to a screen. The movements of two other live performers are also filtered through kinect sensors and projected anew. Human becomes something almost alien-like or, as in Pirici’s own words, more-than-human. The concert installation is called “New Skin” and reflects on the “human” in what is perhaps one of its most specific emotional states: the making of and reaction to music. It seems like something everybody can relate to at Roskilde Festival. Adda Kaleh sings and performs (alongside two other performers) and the outcome connects live bodies with their digital extensions.

Alexandra Pirici’s previous performative art works have resounded everywhere from the Venice Biennale to Centre Pompidou. So do take notice! With Pirici’s musical avatar Adda Kaleh, music and performance come together to form a whole. Don’t be frightened if it alienates you a bit – hopefully you will find some beauty, and perhaps even sci-fi visions of the future inside the expression as well. Adda Kaleh aka Alexandra Pirici’s work “New Skin” is made in collaboration with Andrei Dinu, Ion Cotenescu, Jared Marks and Maria Mora.

WHO IS ALEXANDRA PIRICI?

Classically trained as a dancer and choreographer, Pirici started in the world of theater, but she found herself naturally transitioning into the art world as her work grew increasingly experimental, and the limits of the theatre stage began to feel too constrictive. She has exhibited at numerous galleries and museums, including the New Museum New York and the Tate Modern, London. Pirici’s work is always live. She is interested in how a performative action plays out (be it in minutes or hours) and, ideally, lives on. We can almost guarantee that “New Skin” will somehow stay with all Roskilde-goers.

Every year we book a handful of shows for Roskilde Festival, that are something else in very different ways. 2018 is no exception. If you’re the careful concert adventurer at Roskilde, you have probably already read through all the artists’ presentations and found these shows. This is a quick guide for the rest of you. Here’s a list of special shows at Roskilde Festival that you shouldn’t miss out on.

OPERA AND RAP – TOGETHER!

Opera and rap mix? Of course they do! Operap is made up of six of Denmark’s most streetwise rappers who will join forces with six of Scandinavia’s loudest classical singers. DJ Noize takes care of the beats, backed by 22 string players. This is a world premier, and it’s presented in collaboration with CPH Opera Festival.

GOSPEL SINGING TO HOUSE BEATS

Another mix of genres. This show is all about house music and gospel. Yes, you read that correctly! House Gospel Choir is the place where spirituality and the euphoria of the dancefloor come together. 17 singers, a DJ and a group of percussionists will do their utmost to raise the roof (if we ever had one!).

NORWEGIAN JAZZ MAN PLAYS THREE SHOWS

What’s better than a free-for-all jazz concert? The answer is three of them! We’ve asked free jazz drummer Paal Nilssen-Love to come up with three different concert formats, with himself as the anchor man. Prepare for a bit of funkiness from Brazil, noise from Japan and, of course, massive energy from his Large Unit big band.

When the moon is up the punk kids come out to play. Three Danish bands – Ond Tro, Motorsav and Nyt Liv – breathe a boiling energy into the intimate Gloria stage. Prepare for melodically chugging K-town punk, bleak hardcore punk and muscular, fierce hardcore. Plenty of stuff to rage out to!

We don’t get to hear much contemporary Middle Eastern music of the funky, rocking, weird and independent kind. In 2018 we present three exciting acts: Yasmine Hamdan plays adventurous electro pop, Lekhfa delivers edgy, off-kilter, psychedelic dance music, and Dwarfs of East Agouza channel Egyptian vibes into pulsating psych-folk jams.

BLACK METAL AND TRADITIONAL FOLK SONGS

Danish one-woman army Myrkur does it all. On one hand you have black metal, on the other you have folk songs. Darkness, screaming and growling go hand in hand with gorgeous melodies and enchanting siren song. At Roskilde you get a loud Friday and an acoustic concert Saturday.

JAPANESE NOISE HAVOC

In the presence of the Japanese noise juggernaut Merzbow and all-embracing rockers Boris, you will get a bucketful of sound coming at you. They have made the double album Gensho together, with Boris on one album and Merzbow on the other, and they must be played simultaneously. Here, you get the whole thing live!

This is something else. First, a shaman performs an opening ritual. Then Danish/German/ Nor ­­wegian outfit Heilung’s music sucks you in with drones, ancient frame drums, stomping, dark synths and voices whispering, chanting, singing and screaming. AT ROSKILDE 2018

It goes without saying that hip-hop is more popular than ever on the global music scene. It dominates the charts, sells out arenas and shows dazzling streaming numbers all over. And the genre is clearly reflected in the music requests we receive. If you look over our line-up of 184 artists, you’ll find hip-hop in all sizes and flavours. This is a quick guide for all appreciators of the bouncy, beat-heavy and wordy genre. We’d like to take you through five categorisations:

UK RAP

So much good stuff is happening in the UK at the moment. Stormzy climbed to no. 1 on the British charts with his debut album, and he is, of course, an unavoidable figure when it comes to UK rap. His approach to the grime genre is simply stellar. Another version of stellar is Nines, a gangster road rapper and one of the most authentic names bursting from the underground straight into the charts. Stefflon Don brings a much-needed feminine touch to the scene. She’s brash and glamorous, and her fusion of dancehall sexuality, American gangsta rap attitude and a sprinkling of an Afrobeats vibe is the natural sound of melting pot London. Rounding things off, is the multi-artist package called New Gen, a young and timely snapshot of London’s burgeoning underground music scene, presenting no less than eight MCs and a DJ in one concert.

STRAIGHT-UP HIP-HOP

We also of fer classic approaches to hip-hop from some of the very best emcees out there. Eminem is the obvious headliner – taking on both recent apocalyptic anger and early screwball humour with his idio­ syncratic rap style, Em will surely pull you into his evocative drama! Black Star is Talib Kweli and Mos Def (now Yasiin Bey) who laid the blueprint for the next phase of black power rap in 1998. Now, the duo is back! With experimental productions and bleak lyrical brilliance, Vince Staples deserves to be right up alongside Kendrick Lamar in popularity – he’s that great! Speaking of great, Joey Bada$$ chose his name to get noticed. The music in itself does the trick. He’s speaking truth to power, and he straddles both golden age hip-hop and a taste for catchy urban flavours.

THE CROSS-OVERS

We absolutely love the artists who transcend genres as well as those who stick with their expression and cross over into chart territory. We have several representations in hip-hop. Anderson .Paak is a shiny example of how you fuse rap, funk and R&B with a front man who can both sing, rap and play the drums, sometimes all at once.

43 First-ever OVO signee PartyNextDoor is a trustful supplier of boast-filled slow jams, and Danny Brown is a straight-out mental genre-denier and a trailblazer at that. His agitated, squawking voice is a true pleasure. Not really a rap act, but an everything-at-once party machine: Gorillaz usually involves a rapper or two in their beat-heavy sounds.

THE DANISH SCHOOL

Future flagbearers of red & white rap are Loke Deph, who turns everyday humdrum into shiny poetry, and Emil Kruse who rolls out his disillusioned love songs in an exciting mix. And oh, did you notice the project Operap? Street-wise rappers team up with opera singers.

ATLANTA-ISM

You know we’re going to dwell a bit on the most popular sub-genre of hip-hop in recent years now, right? Roskilde has had its share of trap rappers over the years, and this year we have a couple of as well. 6lack is the real deal with hazy, down-tempo rap and modern R&B sounds. Flying from Atlanta to the 19th arrondissement of Paris, we’ll find a special brand of Afro trap coming from MHD who delivers an awesome mix of West African sounds and hard-edged trap. Perfect way to get some French lessons!

FIRST HIP-HOP at ROSKILDE... EVER

DANNY BROWN

The first hip-hop heard at Roskilde Festival was in 1989. The band was Danish and called Rockers by Choice. The first international act followed the year after: In 1990 we were treated to De La Soul. Since then, we’ve seen visits from the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, Outkast, Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg and Nicki Minaj.

The Danish school of hiphop is well represented at Roskilde Festival. We have ever y thing from Benal ’s heavy beats, bubbly hooks and clever lyrics (special show awaits!) to newcomer ArtigeArdit’s thoughtful rap about late-night, big city binges. More good stuff is cooking in the underground.

Ctrls (pronounced ‘controls’) is Troels Knudsen, an electronic musician who has been immersed in music for pretty much most of his life. Ctrls was initiated in 2012 and developed a fast-paced and futuristic style, seeking out the various nuances of techno and its neighbouring genres. Look forward to a hard-hitting, closing live set at Countdown.

Daniel Savi is a Danish/Scottish DJ who is very keen on house music. He will deliver energetic lessons in classic deepness, acid and vocal house. He is a part of the label Copenhagen Underground Posse. He will take residency at the Countdown stage on Sunday 1 July.

This DJ’s mix under the title “Afreako World Disco”, is a nice summation of his musical melting pot. Discothèque Mobumfe brings disco and boogie with a twist of African music in various forms. He also adds modern genres to the mix including house, UK dubstep, drum & bass and more.

ECSTASY IN ORDER DK

This band could easily convince you that that they were raving it up at The Haçienda in Manchester (or rather... Madchester) in the late 80s. ­Ecstasy in Order is a brandnew trio who joyfully soundtracks the intoxicated nightlife by means of drum machines, acidic synths, noisy guitars and distorted bass lines.

Goss is a new and red-hot act on the Danish music scene. And boy, can he sing! His sweet and uncomplicated vocals are pitched somewhere between R&B and pop and completely unadorned, which is a rarity. The EP Healthcare is an exhibition in perfectly crafted songs about love and identity.

Iris Gold is a true star in the making. The golden recipe for her songs fuse flower power with hip-hop beats, soulful vocals and a pop approach with choruses that get stuck in your ear. Jada is one of Denmark’s new pop sensations. She has spellbound listeners with her solid song writing and vocal talent. Jada writes songs with edge and soul, wrapped in detailed pop arrangements. Ready to be fooled? If you had your radio tuned to Danish station P3 lately, chances are that you’ve been exposed to Danish duo Fool’s contagious earworms “Strapped”, “Outcast” and “Live a Little”. Producer Jabs and singer Adrian pack venues in Denmark and they will do the same at Roskilde!

Fans of distorted guitars, restless feelings and a fresh distillation of alt. rock, come closer. Rome Is Not a Town is laced with an acerbic rock undercurrent. This Gothenburg-based quartet has

Slægt delivers what can be best described as epic blackened heavy metal with plenty of catchy moments. They play fast but without the usual blastbeats. Instead, they explore sound patterns that may seem familiar, but Slægt makes them sound fresh. Their live show is a must-see if you’re a fan of curious and gut-punching metal.

They are a mysterious electronic duo working inside a trippy 80s universe full of neon-coloured synth-pop that will suck you right in! If you like the theme from Stranger Things or an act like Kavinsky, TAN is right up your alley. When playing live the duo leaves the stage to drag queens. Camp, indeed, and something you shouldn’t miss out on.

Alex Vargas has struck thousands of music lovers with his futuristic soul. And he covers a lot of ground. There are hints and dashes of soul, R&B and electronica which all fit neatly beneath an umbrella term that Vargas describes as ‘noise soul’. In concert he showcases his spellbinding voice and his multi-instrumentalism as he swaps mics, moves from keys to piano to soundboard to straight up belting his heart out.

AMMAR 808 is a project by acclaimed Tunisian musician and producer Sofyann Ben Youssef who specialises in reworking raï and chaabi arrangements using a Roland TR-808. Brimming with rapid, dense beats, twangy keys and compressed darbukas, this self-proclaimed ‘North-African futurist’ embodies the newfound vigour and enthusiasm of the contemporary music scene in the Maghreb.

The Roc Nation signee’s latest album is called Mumble Rap, but don’t let the title fool you. With an engaging mic presence, Belly commands attention with every bar, whether he’s boasting about his success or lamenting about his shortcomings. The music is downbeat and it gets you grooving!

BEN FROST AU

Noise. Haze. Darkness. Confusion. Beauty. Many words have been used to describe Ben Frost’s bass-heavy, distorted aural experiments. The Iceland-based Australian’s special brand of industrial, gothic electronica and stark classical minimalism seeks to wrap his audience in sounds that both caress and kick and transform Roskilde Festival into a desolate dystopian landscape.  BABY IN VAIN

90s-style alternative rock is enjoying quite the revival these years, and one of the most roaring, fierce and distorted takes on the style comes from Baby in Vain. Armed with guitars and drums, Andrea, Lola and Benedicte know how to stir up a racket. The band released their critically acclaimed debut album More Nothing last year. So, if you’re up for some no-nonsense, late-night noise rock, you’re in the best of hands here.

It’s difficult not to raise one’s arms in excitement over Danish songwriter Bisse. The 30-year-old musician has manifested himself as one of the most original voices on the Danish scene. Over the course of seven albums (and one EP), released in just three years, he has incorporated everything from hip-hop to post-punk into his sound, with an ever-expanding expression. With his stellar backing band, you’re in for a treat. Not to be missed!

“One two three / Mos Def and Talib Kweli / We came to rock it on to the tip top / Best alliance in hip hop”. 20 years ago, Talib Kweli and Mos Def, now Yasiin Bey, released a collaborative album under the Black Star name. Their tight wordplays twist and turn through sparse, jazz-rooted rhythms calling out for awareness and freedom. Now, they’re at it again with a new album in the works.

Funaná is the forbidden music of the Cape Verde islands. It’s a rousing, accordion-based style that evolved from the music of African slaves in rural communities. Victor Tavares, better known as Bitori, is one of the finest exponents of the genre. He has teamed up with the exuberant young singer Chando Graciosa and some stellar musicians for explosive songs about struggle. Bitori makes it hard not to dance to the revolution!

This French duo is made up of two cousins. One is a filmmaker, the other a musician. Together, they have a slow, cinematic take on dub and house music, with stunning videos to go with the music. When The Blaze plays at Roskilde, you can expect a stunning live show that will aim for all of your senses. Solid visuals go hand in hand with the house music. It will make you dance and shed a tear at the same time.

With inspiration from Bob Dylan and the Danish treasure of songs, the idolised artist has found the rare flower of poetry again and again and his massive song catalogue is a music genre in itself.

The blue’n’yellow take on the extreme genre proved itself to be more playful and experimental than the American origin. Dark Tranquillity have since expanded their sound and remain a relevant force on today’s metal scene.

Here’s a super group who’s got things spot on! Dead Cross is a monstrous unit that sees ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo team up with Faith No More front man Mike Patton. Along with Justin Pearson and Michael Crain (both known from The Locust and Retox), they have come together for a ferocious burst of inventive hardcore punk. Dead Cross truly combines all the strengths of the members. Approach with care and excitement!

This band sort of crafted the template for what would become known as American pop-punk – a warp-speed amalgam of adolescent angst, snotty attitude and championship melody. Although they are based in Boston, the heart of the Debo Band is in Ethiopia. The 11-members strong group mixes originals with tunes from or associated with the home country. The band incorporates Ethio-jazz, folk and pop tones from the Horn of Africa infused with tinges of motifs from Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as punk, experimental and psychedelic rock. That’s right, they blend it all in, and they do so eminently!

Cruising between the lines of EBM, post-punk, techno, electro and more, you can be sure that DEBONAIR will bring amazing (and weird) bangers to the party. Dona Onete is hailed as the grand dame of Amazonian song for her wonderfully feisty compositions, influenced by the carimbó dances of the region’s indigenous and Afro-Brazilian people, and her soulful boleros. Carimbó typically addresses themes of nature and tradition. Onete creates her own style called carimbo chamegado, singing about love and sex while agitating it with samba and pagode.

DJ Rashida will set the mood just right before Bruno Mars enters the Orange Stage. She’ll do a short warm-up DJ set on the Orange altar. DJ Rashida has already circled the globe numerous times in the company of big names such as Prince, Kelis, Cee-Lo and Pharrell Williams. She is now a household name in her own right.

Fever Ray is the new leading light in experimental pop music. The woman behind Fever Ray is Karin Dreijer. Her musical career has long been defined by music that’s viscerally and intellectually powerful. As one half of The Knife, she spent 15 years redefining Sweden’s electronic scene. Under her solo moniker, the self-titled debut established the sound of her own unique world, and she followed suit with Plunge.

Two sisters, Johanna and Klara Söderberg, make up First Aid Kit. They have won universal praise for their blend of folk and indie pop with pitch-perfect harmonies that can make the toughest of people cry. They have released four albums full of lush, expansive songs that use the siblings’ uncanny blood harmony to full effect, elevating their lowkey folk songs into something majestic.

He has been called the definitive indie electronic artist. Producer and musician Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet has certainly earned widespread acclaim for his fusion of organic and electronic sounds. Four Tet has successfully blended genres like folk, hip-hop and jazz with dance music (and remixed everyone from Radiohead to Grimes). He loves to experiment but always remains accessible.

GAMELAN SALUKAT ID

Gamelan is traditional ensemble music from Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of tuned percussive instruments. Dewa Alit is the main man behind Gamelan Salukat, which consists of 21 musicians and three dancers. They strike with utter precision and the metallic acoustics ring up a whirl of sounds. It can be beautifully chinkish and other times almost nightmarish. When all members join in, the band sounds like a gigantic clockwork in motion.

Fleet Foxes are masters of great harmonies that conjure up images of vast forests, waterfalls and basically any place you would feel free to simply be. Robin Pecknold is one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation. The band has three albums of gorgeous music under their belt. Since they’re not touring much in these parts of the world, there is much to look forward to when they visit Roskilde Festival for the first time in nine years.

This is something else. Heilung comes from another time (and place, perhaps?): The Iron Age and Viking period. They sing, whisper and roar lyrics found on runic stones, old spear shafts and amulets. Their music is difficult to pinpoint. You can hear drones, ancient frame drums, stomping, dark synths and voices whispering, ethereal singing, screaming and more. Some call it witchcraft music. We call it music that simply sucks you in.

House music clubs have been called churches for people who have fallen from grace. Anyone who has been caught up in the rapture of a true house classic can testify to its power to unify and uplift. House Gospel Choir is the place where spirituality and the euphoria of the dancefloor come together. The choir brings together 17 outstanding singers amped up even further by a DJ, percussion and keyboards.

If you’re a sucker for sugary pop-punk with big choruses you have to take a bite of The Hunna. The band was first introduced to the world with their debut album 100, and they have made a big splash in their home country being hailed as UK’s next big rock sensation. In concert, everything they bring has even more oomph to it. The Hunna are masters at delivering excitable highs and emotional lows.

I’M WITH HER US

Sara Watkins (violin), Sarah Jarosz (banjo, mandolin and guitar) and Aoife O’Donovan (guitar) all have successful solo careers in acoustic, hand-played folk music. In I’m With Her, the three musicians make beautiful music. When the three women sing together, their voices become one instrument, pure as snow, be it three-part harmonies or solo turns by the microphone.

He sits cross-legged on stage, working from behind his modular synth, surrounded by stellar musicians who conjure up trance music jams. James Holden started out as an electronica wonder kid, but then started a self-described “rebellion against dance music”. His gone down another adventurous path, serving up a giddy maelstrom of gnawa, cosmic prog, krautrock, astral jazz, techno and psych-folk.

HOUSE GOSPEL CHOIR UK

Interpol stand tall among the New York guitar acts that blew up in the early 2000s. They have become one of the defining rock bands of the new century. These mavericks, all dressed in sharp black suits, hit the ground running with two classics of nightprowling, post-punk melodrama, 2002’s Turn On the Bright Lights and 2004’s Antics. Their sixth album will see the light of day in 2018, so expect both new songs and modern classics from Interpol.

On her latest album Halo, Argentinian folktronica artist Juana Molina fills each track with an occultlike intrigue – as if each of its disparate elements are somehow from a more sinister and surreal world. The way she re-animates the rotting corpse of bossa nova while pulling the strings of her Gibson SG with devastating power and precision is marvellous. While you’re distracted, her eerie vocals create a heady potion that pulls you directly into her sonic trap. To dance? Or not to dance?

But on his latest album, All-Amerikkkan Badass, he has developed his style with a taste for urban flavours.

John Maus has been hailed as a synth-pop retrofuturist and a punk intellectual. He is known for the intensity of his live sets. Maus is joined by a bassist, drummer and keyboardist. The band takes care of the music while Maus tears at his eyeballs, pulls his hair, headbangs and grabs for his heart. John Maus’ synth-pop is bizarre and beautiful all at once.

Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott initially started rapping under the alias JayOhVee but eventually changed it to Joey Bada$$. He has stated that the name change is due to the media’s focus on rappers with more cynical names. Apropos cynical: Did you catch him starring alongside Rami Malek in the dark and dystopian TV series Mr. Robot ?

There are only few electronic live acts as spontaneous and distinctive as Juju & Jordash, a pair of jazz aficionados who use house and techno as a starting point to launch off into the unknown. Rather than triggering pre-made loops or replaying studio works when performing, they create on the fly, cook up drum beats, jam out chords and melodies and take their sound wherever they feel like.

This 27-year-old producer delivers melodic, otherworldly dream-pop sensibilities and thumping, hypnotic underground club music that project Russian landscapes, sweeping mythologies and analogue synthesizers. It’s ok to dance as long as you don’t smile too much.

Kelly Lee Owens’ feather-light music drifts between cavernous techno, spectral pop and the mechanical pulse of krautrock. Owens defies genres, yet she manages to turn everything into a dazzling, alchemical whole. When playing live, Kelly Lee Owens is a builder of atmosphere, and you can look forward to being completely immersed in her moods.

Kinshasa-based KOKOKO! manage to convey their love of electronic music with little resources. Instead of samplers and 808s, they’ve made instruments out of discarded waste from the streets of Kinshasa. Typewriters and bottles become percussion, bin lids and tin cans form part of an ensemble. Kinshasa is indeed a city you listen to. And when it comes alive at Roskilde 2018 it will be a spectacle for both the eyes, ears and your dancing feet.

Paal Nilssen-Love is a prodigious drum virtuoso. He works wonders in the realms of jazz and especially free jazz. The drummer formed his big band Large Unit in 2013. The ensemble is made up of 14+ excellent musicians, mostly from Norway’s younger generation of improvising musicians. Paal NilssenLove composes the pieces, but always in an open process with lots of room for improvisation.

Berlin-based, American experimentalist Laurel Halo has a propensity for the disarmingly strange and beautiful. Madball will put on an intense, infectious show and make it evident that, in the words of their 2014 release, Hardcore Lives.

Mavi Phoenix is a 23-year-old singer and rapper from Austria. Her refreshing sound moves fluidly between rap, R&B and contemporary pop. After the release of her EP Young Prophet (2017), The Fader described her as a “lo-fi pop heroine” ready for the big time. Her latest singles are both mellow, summery and upbeat.

Sacré bleu! Straight outta the 19th arron­ dissement, this 23-year-old Parisian rapper produces self-described ‘Afro trap’, a mix of West African sounds and hard-edged trap. He spans both ends of the scale, from greezy street rap to afrobeat pop smashes. MHD has played shows in Senegal, Morocco, Canada, England and France, and now it’s Roskilde’s turn.

The emperors of trip-hop are back. Working out of Bristol in the early 90s, they pioneered this downbeat, murky and harmonious sound. Their debut album Blue Lines and the follow-up Mezzanine are considered modern classics with evergreen singles like “Unfinished Sympathy”, “Teardrop” and “Protection”. Nowadays, the core duo of Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall are back and in an expansive mood, and they will play into the pitch-black night at Roskilde.

Otim Alpha used to be a wedding ceremony leader. It was his duty to involve everybody in the room in his performances, making them wholly spiritual experiences. He collaborates with producer Leo Palayeng to mix up the style he is known for into a newer, hyper-frenetic electronic version; an electronic reinterpretation of the Acholi region’s traditional wedding dances. Get ready for some fast-paced polyrhythmic dance floor madness!

As we’ve also seen in Slipknot, his impressive vocal skills range from raspy singing to hoarse screams.

This unstoppable grime force from South London started out as a freestyle rapper. Now, with his own distinct take on grime, he has established himself as a star on the scene despite only releasing one album. When Stormzy plays this year he’ll be weeks away from turning a quarter of a century and yet looks like he’s been performing for a full century without ever tiring. Wherever there is a stage, Stormzy can fill it out.

What do you get when you mix grunge, pop hooks and the frenetic live energy of DIY punk? The answer is Yonaka, a four-piece from Brighton who have kicked down the doors of the UK live music scene. There is no blueprint to their irresistible sound, just multiple ingredients, which they weave into their music like many-coloured sequins, somehow making them feel completely fresh in the process.

Since the late 90s, London-based Ashley Burchett aka Ø [Phase] has been part of the UK techno scene. His style ranges from gritty minimal techno to Detroit-influenced material. He released his debut Module Overload on Steve Bicknell’s Lost/ Cosmic Records in 2000 followed by a string of productions for London’s Surface/Inceptive Records and Ben Sims’ Ingoma imprint. His hard-hitting techno will make you move in the hardest of ways!

JACK OF ALL ECLECTIC TRADES

Yasuaki Shimizu’s resume spans rearranging Bach for tenor sax and accompanying everyone from Deee-Lite’s Towa Tei to jazz singer Helen Merrill and “Twin Peaks” chanteuse Julee Cruise. His own work similarly turns bits and bobs from all and any genres into something all his own.

Yasuaki Shimizu has long been an underground sensation in Japan, but he reached new heights when the album Utakata no hibi from 1983 was reissued in 2015. It represents a glimpse into an unknown world, a wealth of genres, an abundance of radical ideas. His music is both new wave, jazz, ambient and fusion. It’s tropical art pop, it’s an atmospheric trip, a door to beautiful and bizarre world. Yasuaki Shimizu truly is a unique composer.

The way human beings produce, distribute and prepare food is probably the largest single contributor to climate change, both in the world in general and at a festival. Actually, 40 % of the festival’s CO2 footprint comes from the meat that is eaten at the festival. That’s why we try to limit our impact on the environment by ensuring that no less than 90 % of the food served at Roskilde Festival is organic. Roskilde Festival both influences and reflects the trends of the time, which is why the range of vegetarian and vegan dishes has grown in 2018 and will continue to grow over the next few years. We know there’s quite a difference in size of the wallets our guests bring to the festival. That’s why the selection of food and beverages must include offers for the student living on study grants as well as the more well-off individuals with the coin for something extra. Various associations and organisations run many of the food stalls, which ensures that profits benefit charitable purposes. Others are run by professional caterers who also contribute some of their profits to the overall charity supported by Roskilde Festival.

FOOD COURTS AND TRUCKS

The Food Courts are Roskilde Festival’s food laboratory which challenges the perception of festival food and works towards a continuous development of the choices of food available at the festival. This is where we test delicious new festival food concepts. The opening hours are the same as other food stalls and so are the prices. This year we present not one, but three Food Courts at Roskilde Festival covering the entire Art Zone area. In total, the Food Courts consists of 29 food stalls and 5 bars. Here you can eat your way through street food from several continents, local fresh produce from Lolland, spicy crab stick sandwiches, insect gastronomy, Japanese comfort food, duck burgers, lobster rolls, Latin American and Spanish cuisine, Pakistani food and much, much more. Of course, we also serve festival classics like burgers, organic hotdogs and pork sandwiches.

Sustainability is important at the Food Courts, and besides serving 90 % organic food, all the collected waste from the areas is used to make biogas. In collaboration with DTU as part of a research project, some of the electricity used in the food courts are being supplied by seven electric cars, which are placed on top of the containers surrounding the food stalls.

FOOD TRUCKS ARE ROLLING IN

One of the food news of 2018 is the food trucks at Arena Park (near Arena stage). Here you will find food from Jamaica, Vietnam, Italy, India as well as the classics: hot dogs and a range of delicious burgers. You will also find a food truck park in the campsite this year. It will be focusing on delicious breakfasts, but you can also enjoy Italian polenta, Indian street food and authentic Vietnamese dishes.

Feeling a bit hungover, experimental or sexy? Then you should try our brand-new food tours, hosted in collaboration with Rub&Stub! The tours will take you through selected food stalls and give you a taste and sight of the wide range of dishes that the festival has to offer.

COMMUNAL DINNERS

This year, Absalon, a church gone community hall, is once again bringing the friendly living room vibe of Western Copenhagen to Roskilde festival, complete with their popular communal dinners as well as breakfast. The dinners can hold as many as 250 guests who are seated at long tables, guaranteeing a good vibe and fun conversations. Tickets are DKK 50 and can be purchased on site or via the Facebook event ‘Absalon på Roskilde Festival 2018’ where you’ll also find further information about the many other happenings. Absalon is located in Trade Zone West.

Tickets are DKK 65 and are sold at the entrance. FoodJam is located at East City and is created in collaboration with Madkulturen and Coop. In addition to FoodJam we have the concept Pop Up that takes place out on the camping area. Here you will find the FoodJam chefs cooking a strong soup on the leftover fish bones from the jam sessions. As a participant, you can spice the soup whichever way you like. That way nothing goes to waste at FoodJam 2018!

Fresh vegetable omelet? Steamed mussels? Or fish and chips with homemade remoulade? In the FoodJam kitchen you decide the menu and start cooking once you have selected your produce from the bountiful buffet of fresh organic vegetables, fruit and fresh fish. FoodJam’s culinary counselors are on hand to help and the price is almost ridiculously low. Don’t fancy eating oatmeal for breakfast? Don’t worry, FoodJam is also open for those wanting to make their own brunch.

Environmental and social sustainability is important for Roskilde Festival. This also applies to food and beverages.

Natur­mælk has made some products especially for the hungry crowds at the festival. Due to popular demand they have made an organic ricotta cheese for this year’s festival. One natural and one with garlic/herbs flavour.

Roskilde Festival’s food waste efforts will take place throughout the festival and until the week after the festival, when surplus food and produce is handled, prepared and distributed to socially vulnerable people with the help from 50 different social organisations throughout the country.

...as do the children in Africa. In East City, West City and South City and on the festival site you can get water from Lovespring. And it’s not bottled and transported from a foreign country, it’s from right beneath our feet. Each time you get your water here you support Lovespring’s work with water projects in developing countries.

FROM HAPPY COWS TO HAPPY CAMPERS

All dairy products (milk, butter yoghurt etc.) at Roskilde Festival are from the Danish organic company Naturmælk. They work with 31 family-run farms in southern Jutland to produce high quality and environmentally friendly organic products. Many of them even run biodynamic farms, which have even higher demands for sustainability.

OUR INITIATIVES REDUCING FOOD WASTE

At a large festival like Roskilde Festival, it is almost impossible to avoid waste. However, working with Rub&Stub and Fødevarebanken, two organisations working on reducing food waste, we collect hygienically safe and usable produce from food stalls that would otherwise be thrown out.

CAMP NO OPEN FIRE

The combination of nylon tents and open fire is extremely dangerous, which is why it is important that you do not light any fires in your camp – neither during the festival nor when you’re leaving. The ban on open fire also includes torches, candles, hurricane lanterns, cooking devices and barbecues – including disposable barbecues.

At every agora you’ll find a cooking area and a communal grill for barbecuing your sausages, making soup or simply heating a meal. Please remember that it is absolutely life-threatening to light a gas burner in your tent. Likewise, it is prohibited to burn your tent, containers or other objects when you leave the festival.

FIRST AID

There are thieves at Roskilde Festival, especially in the camping area, so we encourage you to take extra good care of your valuables and use the free cloakrooms at the agoras. Lock your tent with a padlock so your neighbours can keep an eye on it.

First aid stations are located at East City and West City. There is also a first aid station open around the clock on the festival site just west of Orange Stage. At the first aid stations, you will be able to store insulin and other medicine that requires cooling. First aid stations are clearly marked by a first aid sign.

There is also an on-call doctor service at the first aid station at East City.

Report any stolen property at politi.dk. This also includes stolen wristbands. If you have an iPhone, remember to download the Find My iPhone app. It will help the police track down your phone if stolen. For Android users, we recommend Prey, which offers a similar service. IF YOU NEED HELP

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

If you are in need of medical assistance at Roskilde Festival, please use the festival’s own first aid stations. In case of life-threatening emergencies, call +45 112 or use the 112 app, which can track your position and make it easier for the ambulance service to find you. However, the easiest way to get medical assistance is by contacting one of the campsite attendants, so please do so.

EXTREME WEATHER

The Danish summer weather is capricious. It can change significantly from sunny to stormy. Here are some precautions: in case of heavy rain —— Dig ditches around your tent. —— Don’t pitch your tent in the lowest point in the terrain. —— Keep spirits high. in case of thunder —— Don’t seek shelter under trees, especially not single trees. —— Avoid towers and open squares. —— Don’t touch electrical conductive objects, e.g. fences, railings, faucets or appliances connected to electricity networks. —— It’s reasonably safe to use your phone, but remember you’re holding an electrically conductive object in your hand. —— Avoid swimming in the swimming lake. —— Start humming AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”.

SAFETY IN YOUR CAMP

If you need help during the festival, you can address the campsite service attendants wearing orange vests. Furthermore, service attendants are ready to help you at all agoras and also keep an eye on the camping area.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID

Psychological first aid is also available at your nearest first aid station. The investigative teams – the festival’s social workers – can be found on both the festival site and camping areas. All social workers have a relevant pedagogical, social or health professional background. You can easily spot them in their white vests with the words “social worker” on the back.

We closely follow and participate in national and international developments in the safety field, but we still need your help to ensure that you and everybody around you gets the best and most safe concert experience possible.

—— Crowd surf. Crowd surfing is very dangerous. Nobody likes your shoes in their face, and you might fall down or get trampled at worst. Crowd surfing is strictly forbidden at all stages and can cause immediate expulsion from the festival. —— Form human chains. You put others at risk by creating unrest in the crowd. —— Run or push to get in front. You create waves in the crowd and increase the risk of someone falling or being crushed. —— Sit on the shoulders of somebody. You risk getting hurt, and it ruins the concert experience for others.

PIT SYSTEMS

The pit systems in front of Orange Stage and Arena are safety constructions that make the concert experience safe for those of you who would like to be right in front of the stage. Show up early at the concerts since space is limited in the pit systems and there are many who would like to get in there. The green and red lights at the entrance tell you if there is free space available or if the pit is full. You can’t stay in the pit between concerts since they have to be cleared and cleaned. entrance to the pits The pit system entrances are located at both sides of Orange Stage and at the east side of Arena. At Orange Stage, there are two sections. The section at the back is always open at the sides. There are two entrances to the section in front. Access to this section requires a pit wristband for the respective concert.

99 Wristbands for the Orange front section are available for all shows on a given day by the Orange Stage on they day of the concert. You can get your wristband from when the festival site opens (10.00 in the morning except for Wednesday, when the festival site opens 17.00) and until we’re out. They are valid until 45 minutes before show start. After this, the area is open to everyone unless it’s full. See the illustration below.

HIGH ENERGY CONCERTS

Wristbands are not needed for the pits at the Arena stage.

MYTH BUSTERS

Myth #1: “The camping gear I leave behind is donated to charity” Fact: Everything you abandon becomes waste. Bring it home with you. Myth #2: “I can’t get rid of my garbage anywhere!” Fact: There is a waste bin less than 25 meters from your camp. Use it and keep your camp and the festival clean.

Myth #4: “Waste disposal and cleaning up my abandoned crap is included in the ticket price.” Fact: We spend an extra DKK 8 million, which could have gone to charities, on cleaning up after you. Clean up and bring your camping gear home.

APPRECIATE YOUR WASTE — USE THE RECYCLING STATIONS

Every day, parades will come through the campsites and help you keep your area clean. The volunteers hand out empty rubbish bags for your camp in exchange for your full ones.

Did you bring an inflatable mattress to the campsite? Comfy, right? If you don’t want it anymore after the festival, then please hand it in at our recycling stations. The mattresses are especially toxic to the environment because they contain PVC plastic, which shouldn’t end up with the combustible waste we collect from garbage bins and from the campsite in general after the festival.

CLEAN AREAS

Want to live cleaner and greener? In 2018, one in three festival-goers have actively chosen to pitch their tent in a clean area. Here people prefer green grass to broken glass, and would rather dispose of garbage than sit in it. In these areas everybody helps keep the area clean and comfortable. Area J is both clean and silent (no loud music after 22:00, please). clean out loud When you visit the newly expanded area E and the southernmost part of area C this year, you will experience that it is not only our most festive area, but also one of the cleanest. This area is the home of Clean Out Loud. It’s easy to clean up your camp at Roskilde Festival. There are garbage bins at every single camping quadrant, and they are emptied on a daily basis by more than 200 volunteers. Spread out across the camping area you can find large recycling stations, where you can sort your garbage (general waste, metal, glass, batteries, air mattresses and cardboard) 24/7.

ACCESS AND WRISTBANDS

The camping area opens Saturday 30 June at 16:00. The main festival site opens Wednesday 4 July at 17:00.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION A

Your wristband gives you access to the festival. If your wristband is damaged or broken, please contact one of the ticket offices where the individual case will be assessed.

If your wristband is stolen, you must report the theft to the police and bring a copy of the police report to the nearest ticket office where the individual case will be assessed. Stolen wristbands are usually not replaced by Roskilde Festival. Anyone caught without a valid wristband in the festival area will be liable to pay a penalty of DKK 3,500. festival site closed at night When the last concerts are over we close the festival site for the night. We open the gates again at 10:00 the following morning. We do this in order to clear space for deliveries of beer, water, food, etc., and to clean up the site.

103 AGORA

Agoras are the central squares of the neighbourhoods in the camping area. All agoras have a central meeting point, which is marked with a big letter. All agoras have a designated area for cooking, where open fire is allowed (cook here, not in your camp).

In the camping area beer, soft drinks, juice, wine etc. will be sold in cans, bottles and cartons. We encourage you to use either public transportation or your bike to get to Roskilde Festival.

There are no requirements regarding spacing between tents on the campsite, but the fire authorities require that there be at least 3 metres between caravans. Caravans will be guided into place by a service attendant. All fire access routes must be kept completely clear from items and equipment such as tents, guy lines and rubbish. The fire service vehicles must be able to move around unhindered. fire In areas with many people camping close together open fire is dangerous. Therefore, open fire is strictly prohibited in the camping areas. This includes campfires, torches, candles, camping stoves and barbecues. cooking areas There are cooking areas at the agoras where you can use camping stoves, disposable barbecues, the communal grill or the communal campfire spot.

furniture

You are allowed to bring one beverage of your own choosing onto the main festival site in a container of up to 0.5 litres. The container must not be made of glass. Empty beverage containers of any shape and form can be brought onto the main festival site, as long as they are not made of glass.

For fire safety reasons, living room furniture and other similar flammable objects may not be brought into the camping area. This doesn’t apply to regular lightweight camping equipment, objects built into caravans or other equipment normally used when camping in tents.

BICYCLES

You are allowed to ride a bike around the camping area, but the main festival site is off limits for bicycles. You can park your bicycle at entrance East and West, as well as just north of the festival site.

CAMPING

You can camp on the entire camping area (East and West) and in other special camping areas. All camping areas are divided into quadrants, which are identified by a letter and a number. All camping areas are open from Saturday 30 June at 16:00 until Sunday 8 July at 14:00.

107 silent & clean area

COOL LOCKER

Silent & Clean (area J) in Camping East is for those of you who wish to stay in an area that is cleaner and where there are no noisy parties and constant loud music. Everybody is encouraged to help each other make sure that the area is a nice place to be. Music is prohibited in the Silent & Clean area between 22:00 and 10:00.

Want to cool down your food or beverages? We offer lockers at 10 different spots around the campsite. A cool locker is both a locker for your valuables, and a refrigerator. The lockers are placed in cooled containers where the temperature will stay between 4-6° Celsius. Buy access to a cool box for DKK 375 for the whole week.

clean areas In dedicated ‘clean’ areas we also have an increased focus on waste disposal. The ‘clean’ areas are not ‘silent’ areas.

DISABLED GUESTS

During the festival wheelchair users have priority access to to watch concerts from elevated platforms placed near the Orange, Arena, Avalon and Pavilion stages. Parking facilities and restrooms for the disabled can also be found by the stages.

CASHLESS

Roskilde Festival is cashless. This means that you can only use a debit or credit card when you are at Roskilde Festival. We accept all major cards.

EAST, WEST AND SOUTH CITY

CLOAKROOMS

A free cloakroom service is available all over the campsite. Coats, bags, tents and valuables can be checked in and stored here. The cloakrooms will not store cash and take no responsibility for any money stored in the checked-in items. The cloakrooms are open around the clock from Saturday 30 June at 16:00 until Sunday 8 July at 12:00. We also offer free charging of mobile phones. See more under Mobile phones and charging, page 109.

C—E PRACTICAL INFORMATION

In East City, West City and South City you will find the shopping streets and market squares of the festival city. Here you’ll find mobile phone recharging stations, merchandise stalls, first aid stations, beer sales, refund stalls and food stalls. Selected stalls are open around the clock from Saturday 30 June at 16:00 until Sunday 8 July at 04:00 — and a few other stalls are open until 14:00 on the final day.

108 FIRST AID

FISHING LAKE

First aid stations are located at East City and West City. There is also a first aid station open around the clock on the festival site just west of Orange Stage. At the first aid stations, you will be able to store insulin and other medicine that requires cooling. First aid stations are clearly marked by a first aid sign.

In Camping East at Agora J you can go fishing in the artificial fishing lake. You are welcome to bring your own gear or you can rent it by the lake.

There is also an on-call doctor service at the first aid station at East City.

At the laundromat in West City you can have your dirty festival garments washed and dried. Washing, drying, folding and packaging of 5 kg of clothes costs DKK 90.

LAUNDROMAT

psychological first aid Psychological first aid is also available at the nearest first aid station. The investigation teams, the festival’s social workers, can be found both on the festival site and in the camping area. All social workers have a relevant pedagogical, social or health professional background. They are easily identified in their white vests with the words “social worker” on the back.

LOST PROPERTY

Lost property should be handed in immediately to the Information Office/Lost & Found in South City. Lost property can be claimed until Sunday 8 July at 14:00. After Roskilde Festival, unclaimed lost property can be claimed at the festival secretariat, Havsteensvej 11, 4000 Roskilde on Monday 9 July and Tuesday 10 July from 10:00 to 18:00. On Wednesday 11 July remaining lost property will be handed over to the lost property office of Midt- og Vestsjælland’s Police in Roskilde, Skovbogade 3, 4000 Roskilde, tel: +45 46 35 14 48.

MOBILE PHONES and CHARGING mobile phone charging At the cloakrooms on the campsite you can charge your phones, cameras and other devices (up to 15W) if you bring along the charger. In cooperation with the telecommunication company 3, we have made this service free for everyone, because we know just how important a charged phone is at a festival. Items that are unclaimed by Sunday 8 July at 12:00 will be handed over to the police. charging in your pocket

car batteries If you want to recharge car batteries and other larger units, we refer you to East City, West City and camping areas N, M and P. Chargers are not required.

It is strictly forbidden for you to sleep in your car due to fire safety ­regulations.

PARKING general parking rules —— You are not allowed to sleep in your car —— You may not use open fire, gas stoves or other sources of heat in the parking areas. All parking areas are open around the clock from Friday 29 June at 16:00 until Sunday 8 July at 18:00. There is no surveillance of the parking areas, so your own insurance policy will have to cover any damage or theft. paid parking If you need to park close to the festival you can purchase a parking ticket for East or West. bicycle parking Bicycle parking can be found by entrance East and West as well as north of the festival site (see the map). Bicycle parking is free of charge. You’re welcome to bring a bike to the campsite, but we’d like to keep the festival site free of bikes.

M—P PRACTICAL INFORMATION

If you don’t want to leave your phone behind while it’s charging, you should try out Volt. They provide you with a portable power bank that charges your phone right in your pocket. Volt stations are located all over the campsite and the festival area.

POLICE

Until Wednesday 4 July, a pharmacy is located in East City by the first aid station. When the festival site opens you will find the pharmacy by the first aid station west of Orange Stage. Here you can purchase the most common over-the-counter medication, sunscreen, earplugs and condoms. You can also hand in prescriptions.

The police will be present at the festival, but if you have any enquiries please go to the police station at Skovbogade 3, 4000 Roskilde or call +45 114. In case of emergency, the police recommend that you use the ‘112’ app, which can track your location and make it easier for the ambulance service to locate you.

SWIMMING LAKE

Dive into our very own swimming lake by Agora K. There is free access to the lake for all festival participants, as long as you’re not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. There will be life guards present. Remember that Mother Nature, unlike your own mother, doesn’t like soap and shampoo, so please only use these in the showers and not in the lake.

During the nights (from 23:33 to 03:57) after Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday trains go straight to Copenhagen Central Station. Exceptions are trains at 0:57 and 1:57 the night after Wednesday and Thursday, which will stop at Høje Taastrup from where you can take the S-train to Copenhagen Central Station.

Free water is available from taps located by most toilets on the camping site as well as at the festival site. During concerts free water is distributed in front of the stages. You can also buy your own LoveSpring water bottle for DKK 25. All profits go to building water wells in developing countries.

A SING-ALONG INVITATION

Come sing your heart out! From Thursday 5 July to Saturday 7 July, every day at 10:30, we invite you to the Gloria stage for big sing-along sessions. The repertoire is packed with songs from all decades – classics filled with emotions, all very recognisable and easy to sing along to. Read more on page 45.

Will Bene­ dict & Steffen Jørgensen’s I Spend Too Much Time Outside (daily at 14:45) connects TV kitchens, talk shows and psychological dramas, all about human (over)consumption and its consequences.
