Locality: Shansi Province, Central China
Age: Early Triassic, 245 million years
The skeleton of Parakannemeyeria, a large dicynodont from the Early Triassic of China. Dicynodonts lost all teeth except the two upper canine teeth-tusks, but had a horny beak, like turtles. It is assumed that dicynodonts dug plants' rootstock with tusks and then ground it up in their mouth using a corneus covering of gum. Members of the Kannemeyeriidae family to which Parakannemeyeria belongs were widely spread. Their remains are being found on all modern continents, which in the Triassic formed one whole supercontinent - Pangea.
