Way back in the 1990’s there was a fun little show on TV called ST, DS9. It was a time when big hand built models from plastic, wood and steel were constructed to be filmed on a motion control stage,,, Wooo-WEEEE that all seems so long ago!!! because of the huge cost factor to make and shoot a model the call for new ships on DS9 were far a few between. For the final seasons of the show there were a few calls for a handfull of new ships to be created for a few choice episodes,, who would have thought that in just a few years forward you would have single episodes with as many as 5 to six new ships filling the screen like flys on a cows butt!!! HAAA! So with that here is the super big daddy dominion battleship called for to challenge the crew of the tiny Defiant class ship “the Valiant” the ship went thru a few small changes but kept it’s overall mass and shape throughout the illustrated process!! here are the sketches that were developed plus some very nice schematic and size charts from Brad and Gilso’s web pages. here are the links to both of their sites. and also the link to the mighty Ex-astris-Scientia page that is awfully darned cool,!! very nice site and full of very accurate scales and definitions to the various ST vehicles!!!

I knewn that you designed the Breen ship, but I had no idea that you also worked on the Jem’hadar ships as well. I love that battleship.
from that last scale pic, the Deifant look a little one the big size. I though it was half or 1/3 that size.

I was never a big Star Trek fan, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate your beautiful and technical drawings. I have been drawing since I was a child, so I am just mesmorized everytime I look at one of your drawings to realize these were done by a human hand. You are a fantastic artist!
Oh! BTW I realize you were talking about DS9, I just meant Star Trek would have lead me to these other shows, but since I didn’t watch ST, I didn’t see all the other beautiful work that you did.
That second set of schematics wasn’t by Gilso, they were done by Adam Heinbuch, Gilso merely hosted them like he hosts many others.

WOW – thanks John! That Jem’Hadar battleship is my all time second favorite John Eaves ship design. My first favorite being the Enterprise E. Did you design any of the other DS9 ships?

I am trying to remember,,, the Breen was one, and the little Jem Hedar ship seen on this post next to the big Battleship, and a handful of cruisers and cargo ships,,, still digging in those boxes,, Haaa!

I have a possable fun project for you John, one I know alot in the Trek community have pondered….The ‘Norway’ Class. From what I understand the mesh for it, made by Alex Jeager if I’m not mistaken, became corrupted and was never seen again. I know from Screencaps that the underside was actually just the Defiants textures skinned on, with only the upper hulls actually skinned properly. would you happen to have teh resources or contact with Alex to dig anything up on that ship? Just thought I’d put up a fun little project for you that I know alot of people in teh Trek community would be very happy with 🙂
Love this battleship btw, it really flowed well with the other Dominion ships, I still have no idea why so many people compare this ship to the Schimiter so much, its different is soooo many ways 🙂
thanks and I’ll see what I can do,, also there are similarities with this ship to the Scimitar, the bird of Prey, the Valdore, the Jem Hedar, and Dominion ships, and a whole host of others,,, when it came to what the bad guys looked like, all ideas would funnel down to this very familiar shape. it was just the law of the approval process sad to say.
I always wondered about that. I suppose the producers thought anything that belonged to the bad guys should be pointy and deadly looking?

I know what you mean with the familiarities, but then it would be like saying different aircraft are copies of each other as they all have similar shapes 🙂
Always loved this ship for its brief screen time. I loved the days when Trek used physical models.

I can see what you said about similarities with the Scimitar. Seems the Dominion designs set the standard of the curved nacelles that you see later on in Enterprise as well, which usually meant bad guys.
That’s one big, badass ship!! But then the Jem’Hadar weren’t fuzzy kittens! I actually like the top version better, but I suppose there needed to be more differentiation between the battleship and the smaller warship, huh? The bridged design is a bit bulkier/heavier which is certainly not a bad look for this ship. 🙂
Seeing the size of this massive ship compared directly with Defiant makes me like “D” even more. I’ve always seemed to be drawn to the underdog! I like the fighting spirit of “the little guy.”
STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!…I sincerely truly hope you can put out some kind of large format book (Like Syd Meads kinda style) of all this awesome work it really does deserve it!!

I second that idea – a John Eaves art collection would be fantastic!
The Jem’Hadar battleships reminded me a lot of the approach that Spielberg took with the shark in Jaws. We didn’t really see them a whole lot, but that added to the fearfulness of when we did!

Ah, that was a fun episode, where the cadets were playing officers. Of course, attacking that Jem’Hadar Battleship isn’t my idea of courage. It’s more like suicide. 😉

And to think people thought the new Trek film was the first instance a ship in Trek was ran by cadets 😛
Oh ya, these are really nice. If I read correctly, physical models were built? I loved to see some shots of those if that’s true. Is most of the cost in filming a physical model not creating the model itself? How much does is cost a studio to make one, like the Sovy in First Contact.
These are great – I’ve seen a smaller version of one of the new battlecruiser sketches on the Season 6 DVDs, but nothing this large. I hope you run into some of the small Dominion cruiser sketches likewise, because there are some interesting mysteries surrounding it. For example, how did the “V-ship” come to be – was it an independent design, an early version of your design, or a misinterpretation/simplification of your design (which would ultimately be seen as a miniature)? I’ll have to find these drawings!!! I am not sure what the distinction is between The “U” and the “V” version????
The V version basically has V-shaped wings, while the U-version is the “Lead Hadar” physical miniature seen later in the season, with curvier wings. The V was a CG model according to David Stipes, I’m guessing by Vision Art, and it was seen first in the big two-parter, before the miniature.
