About Me
If you had told the high school me that I would be a teacher one day, I would have never believed you. I was considering several professions (veterinary medicine, demolitions technology, athletic training) but teaching was nowhere on the list. To be honest, I didn't really know what I wanted to do. My guidance counselor sensed this and suggested engineering. I pictured engineers sitting behind a desk, running calculations, and wearing pocket protectors. This was not what I was looking for. Begrudgingly, I attended a Women in Engineering conference to learn more. By the end of the day, I was hooked.
I applied to WPI, studied civil engineering, and loved it! After graduation, I worked as a structural engineer, inspecting bridges, designing buildings, and overseeing construction projects; but, I missed school. I started taking classes part-time and eventually earned my masters degree in fire protection engineering. With this, I found a new role, in which I spent my days discussing project needs with clients, solving design problems with fellow engineers, and training new employees. Every day was different and I loved the challenge and excitement that engineering brought to my life.
I realize that I would have never had these experiences if it were not for someone taking the time to teach me about engineering. The high school me had no idea what engineering was and honestly, how many high school students today really know what engineers do? I want to change that. I want to introduce students to engineering while fostering an environment that encourages them to work together and to learn from one another.
