Taxonomic status of two nominal species of Tetraroge (Perciformes: Tetrarogidae): Tetraroge albifrons Duncker and Mohr 1929 and Tetraroge bellona De Vis 1884

Abstract

The taxonomic status of two waspfishes (Perciformes: Tetrarogidae) are revised. The lectotype of Tetraroge albifrons Duncker and Mohr 1929, previously regarded as a junior synonym of Tetraroge barbata (Cuvier in Cuvier and Valenciennes 1829), is confirmed as Tetraroge nigra (Cuvier in Cuvier and Valenciennes 1829), due to the absence of a pair of barbels on the anterior tip of the lower jaw. Although Tetraroge bellona De Vis 1884 has previously been regarded as a junior synonym of Centropogon australis (Shaw in White 1790), the holotype of the former is confirmed as Notesthes robusta (Günther 1860), the only member of the genus Notesthes Ogilby 1903.
