Ursachen, Ausprägungen und Wirkungen der globalen Urbanisierung – ein Überblick

Zusammenfassung

Die Urbanisierung gilt als einer der wirkmächtigsten Prozesse des globalen Umweltwandels. Sie wird verstanden als Anteilszuwachs von in städtischen Siedlungsformen lebenden Menschen, einer zunehmend ubiquitären Verbreitung urban geprägter Lebens- und Konsumstile sowie der Durchsetzung weltumspannender kapitalistischer Marktordnungen. Ohne Zweifel steht die Welt am Beginn eines „Urban Age“ und dies ruft in Gesellschaft, Politik und Wissenschaft in hohem Maße widersprüchliche Bewertungen hervor. Anliegen dieses Beitrags ist es, einen Überblick über die Ergebnisse neuerer Urbanisierungsforschung zu geben. Dies beinhaltet eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit den Ursachen und Erscheinungsformen dieses Phänomens sowie eine Bewertung der Wirkungen von Urbanisierungsprozessen in ihren vielgestaltigen Formen. Ein abschließender Teil des Beitrags skizziert die Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten der Raum- und Umweltplanung.
