Summary
Rationale
This study examined for the first time the relation between remembered parental upbringing style and sleep quality in patients with sleep disorders and healthy control subjects.
Patients and methods
71 healthy volunteers with good sleep and 57 patients with a sleep disorder, predominantly a non-organic insomnia, were investigated with several questionnaires aiming at the recalled parental upbringing style of the subjects.
Results
The comparison of healthy good sleepers and patients with sleep disorders revealed that patients with sleep disorders showed significantly more negatively recalled parental upbringing styles.
Conclusion
Subjects who experienced a more negative, rejective parental upbringing style, either from the father or mother seem to be at a greater risk to develop a sleep disorder in adulthood, as documented by the study results. Parental upbringing style as recalled in adulthood is discussed within the framework of the attachment theory.
Zusammenfassung
Fragestellung
