This is my daughter's second summer and loves the day camp so much. She can't wait to turn 8 to try over night. Would for sure recommend this.

A beautiful camp just over an hour north of the city. The counselors are amazing with the children, and they provide all sorts of activities like rock climbing, sports, swimming and fishing on the scenic lake.

Camp Herrlich has been a home to thousands of children. A safe place. A place for refuge. The amount of joy experienced on this property led by their incredible staff cannot be understated. They have a history of taking in everyone, treating everyone with the kindness and empathy they deserve and are always striving to be better.
I have nothing but positive words for a place that helped raise me into the man I am today.
Bravo CH for continuing the mission of being a place to help our world be a better place.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dayna N.North Salem, NY56114Dec 29, 2022
A welcoming, well-rounded, highly accessible summer camp for an amazing range of ages and abilities. Finally, a local summer program focused on engaging campers outdoors that provides meals and snacks, and crazy flexible scheduling including before/aftercare options for those of us who work! If that isn't enough, the amount of outreach to underserved communities and scholarship options puts Camp Herrlich in a category far above other town programs. My children learn so much every summer, and love seeing friends old and new. Any issues that arise are calmly addressed by administrative staff, who are available day and night. I can't thank CH enough for welcoming my children during the 2020 shut down and every summer since!

The worst camp ever. My children have told me about there experiences and it is horrible. Especially the language, My child has heard a conuseler talk bad about someone else. And one time a kid cursed and they got to come back.

I was a camper there and a foster child, My mother had passed away the year before and the agency sent us all my sister and me. One night I was getting ready for bed and on of the staff an older beat me with a belt, No one came to stop her and I was thinking If my sister was hear she wouldn't allow her to do this to me, I had marks on my arms and face, Earlier that day I was hungry and the lady in the kitchen had given me a snack, and I was beaten for eating food. It took years for me to deal with this and I finely told my sister about it and she said that her and a friend had done some thing to one of the girls suite case and got sent home, I never knew what happen until yesterday. This camp never asked me if I did it the just beat me and know it's the only thing I remember about my time there, It has and still haunts me.

Laura, that sounds absolutely terrible and we, as the current staff of Camp Herrlich, are disgusted and furious that that happened to you. We don't know from your review or your name when this happened, but right now behavior from staff like that is both a fireable and a reportable offense. Anyone who would treat a child like that would be immediately fired and reported to the NYS Child Abuse hotline, since we are all mandated reporters.

Camp Herrlich is over crowded and under staffed. They hire 16 year olds as senior counselors, pay them less than $4.50/hr and expect them to be able to handle up to 12 kids (any age - including 6 year olds) by themselves for 7 hours straight. They don't get breaks, often can't even use the bathroom or get water all day. On heat oppressive days the kids do not get extra time in the water. There is not enough supervision for this to be safe and the counselors are so overworked that the majority of them are miserable. There is a resident camp sharing the facilities with the day camp and just last week a camper got hurt and had to be air lifted (which I understand can happen however the likelihood decreases with higher staff to camper ratios).

I am so sorry that we just saw this review just now. Thank you for your feedback, we wanted to expand on some of the things that you wrote, even though we are now almost 3 years since the comment date. What a different world it is now! We are proud and grateful to have continued safely serving the children and families in our community through the pandemic.
Our camper to staff ratio is 1 counselor and 1 jr. counselor to every 12 children, many times less than that, especially during COVID times. We follow all regulations and best practice guidelines that it takes to be accredited by the American Camp Association and to get our Summer permit from the Putnam County Department of Health. Our younger groups are even smaller than 10 campers, still with two staff members and a "kiddie camp director" to coordinate and facilitate. We also have a number of head counselors and program staff available to help out groups when they need it or when the counselor needs a break. Luckily, many of our staff have come up through our ranks as campers, Counselors in Training, Junior Counselors, and then Senior Counselors, so we get to know them really well.
On hot days, we incorporate water into our activities (splash kickball!) and encourage the groups to get in the woods where it is shady. Bathroom and water breaks are built in to the schedule throughout the day and the staff are trained in health and wellness during orientation and throughout the summer. You are correct that kids don't get extra time in the water, it's simply because in order to get all the kids in the water throughout the course of the day, we have to schedule each group a specific time.
The counselor pay is something that we are actively working on, trying to find the balance between keeping camp affordable for our local families and paying our staff more. We are working on it right now with our strategic planning committee and hope to continually increase staff pay for our staff who we value greatly.
Thank you also for your concern about our camper who was injured. Thank goodness they were ok! Our excellent local first responders make the decisions about the continuing care of the children and luckily our emergency plans and procedures are a well-oiled machine so we are ready to go if and when an emergency happens. We are eternally proud of our staff and campers who know exactly what to do.
Thanks again for the feedback, please contact us directly at the camp number if anyone has any questions.
