MTV Video Music Awards: 1984

Madoona's see-through white dress with a 'boy toy' belt is one of the most well-known outfits in music history, and many singers have paid their tributes to it.

1980s

Her Like a Virgin album saw her wearing many electric outfits with bold colours, bangles, bandanas and more. Her style was then picked up by youngsters of her generation.

Material Girl: 1984

For her Material Girl music video, she wore a beautiful pink gown that inspired generations of artists. It went up for auction and is estimated to fetch more than £150,000.

La Isla Bonita: 1987

She brought back Spanish gowns after dropping this music video from her True Blue album.

Express Yourself: 1989

Madonna wore an androgynous suit for the Express Yourself music video, which is from her Like a Prayer album. This came at a time when she wanted to comment on gender.

Cannes Film Festival: 1991

She went to the festival in Jean Paul Gaultier lingerie, along with and a pink kimono robe, to promote her film In Bed With Madonna.

1990s

In the early 1990s, Madonna made leather jackets a fashion statement, much like pop star David Bowie.

The Oscars: 1991

Madonna attended the 1991 Oscars after-party with Michael Jackson in Marilyn Monroe-inspired blonde curls, red lips, dark eyebrows. 

VH1 Fashion Awards: 1998

Around the time she released the Frozen song, she wore this bright gown by Olivier Theyskens, which matched the overall appeal of the music video. The designer soon shot to fame after this.

VMAs and Grammys: 1999

Madonna popularised Japanese kimonos in 1999 when she performed at VMAs and Grammys that year.

MTV Europe Music Awards: 2005

She performed her song  Hung Up at MTVs award show, where she wore this iconic dress to mark her return to music industry.

Cannes Film Festival: 2008

She wore a dress by Chanel on Cannes red carpet for her documentary I Am Because We Are. 

Super Bowl: 2012

At the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, she wore Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci to sing a medley of hits.
