[se´lom]body cavity, especially the cavity in the mammalian embryo between the somatopleure and splanchnopleure, which is both intra- and extraembryonic; it develops into the pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial cavities. adj., adj coelom´ic.

The fluid-filled cavity within the body of most multicellular animals, except some invertebrates such as flatworms and cnidarians, that lies between the body wall and the digestive tract and is formed by the splitting of the embryonic mesoderm into two layers. Also called body cavity.

the main body cavity of most animals with three body layers, being a fluid-filled space between inner and outer layers of MESODERM. The coelom often has tubes connecting to the outside called COELOMODUCTS.
