coelom

the main body cavity of most animals with three body layers, being a fluid-filled space between inner and outer layers of MESODERM. The coelom often has tubes connecting to the outside called COELOMODUCTS. In simple animals, e.g. the ANNELIDS, the coelom acts as a store for excretory products and gametes, prior to expulsion to the outside.
