Could I Keep Bumblebee Gobies In The Community Tank Freshwater?

by Catherine Tran 16 Aug 2023 0 Comments

Could I keep bumblebee gobies in the community tank freshwater?

Yesssssssss, absolutely yes, I'm shouting YES very loudly from this side of the screen! Do you hear that?

There are a lot of rumours in the community about this species living in brackish water, very difficult to care for and needs its own requirements.

These are false rumors and please forget about them!!

It's time for me to clear this up for you!

Bumblebee Gobies 100% live in freshwater and they live happily with rasbora, tetra, guppy and ghost shrimp.

This is exactly what I'm gonna walk you through in this article around the story of bee gobies and why you must have them in your tank.

Come with me!

When it comes to bee gobies, I think of "flying water bees", which sounds ridiculous but it's true.

We can't take our eyes off the unique appearance of alternating black and yellow stripes on their bodies that accentuate any aquarium.

They have small heads and relatively slender bodies, with transparent fins. Males tend to be slightly thinner than females. However, both have the same bulging eyes.

The size of these fish is not very large averaging only about an inch and a half long and cannot grow anymore

They look like adults on the inside, but on the outside, they are still very childish and cute!

I want to talk about the second reason you should start a long-term relationship with them, which is…

Longevity.

Did you know the average lifespan of a goby is about three years under normal conditions?

And if you give them a good habitat, their lifespan can be up to 4 years!

Imagine how many schools of bee gobies they will produce during those 4 years and they will grow up...

Until one day when you SUDDENLY noticed the tank… and you were startled

Holy shit! they have become a powerful "group of bee gobies" ready to protest to demand a bigger tank.

😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

Well, that's 4 years later, and now if you still don't have any in your tank.

To prepare for the trip to welcome bee gobies to the tank, you need to know the water parameters so that they can live well.

Let's start small with a 10-gallon tank and 2-3 bee gobies.

I always advise my clients who are just starting out small at first and once you get the hang of it, it's easy to level up your game.

✅Water Temperature: 77°F–79°F (25–26°C)

✅pH 7.6–8.0

The goby fish cannot tolerate fast currents. So strong water pumps or even air bubbles won't make them comfortable swimming.

You should keep the flow from the filter so that the water moves without causing trouble to the fish.

In general, they are quite easy to care for with the requirements of the tank and one thing that I really enjoy is that they love to dig under the substrate.

This is understandable because they are low-lying fish, so most of the day they will explore, dig and explore again.

Start with a nice sandy substrate as they are bottom feeders that tend to spend time near the substrate.

Some bumble bees even like to dig a little deeper into the sand, so if you spread a thick and rough substrate, such as gravel, it will be difficult to do so and risk injury to them.

Before you know the next secrets of this fish, let's take a look at what customer reviews have to say after purchasing the Bee Goby at Micro Aquatic Shop:

C.G.

Happy

The Goby's seemed quite active when they arrived after their long trip, and once they were released into the tank, they were soon swimming around.

Violet Ed.

I was a bit hesitant to buy these after reading some of the reviews. But I decided to pull the trigger anyway and I'm sure happy I did.

Shari Patton

Sooooo cute, arrived healthy and a bonus couple of fish. These guys rock!

Thank you to our customers for choosing Micro Aquatic to buy Bee Goby.

And we continue to move on to the next step of adding decorations to the Bee Goby tank.

If you already have a community tank and your work now is to simply add 1 or 2 Bee Gobys to your tank right away, you can skip this step and jump right down to the “breeding” step.

But if this is your first tank, you'll need a little "furniture" for the Bee Goby.

They are quite friendly but a bit shy at first, so you need to add a few aquatic plants like Java Fern, Anubias nana to make them bolder and quicker to socialize.

I think the part you are most looking forward to is the food, so what will these bee gobies eat and are they picky eaters?

They like to eat raw food and frozen food.

I'll give you some good options:

Bloodworms

Daphnia

Tubifex worms

Brine shrimp

If you can always keep food in the tank, great for them to only eat food when it is moving, otherwise they will ignore it.

But feed them in small amounts just enough so your tank doesn't get dirty quickly or you can feed them in small amounts but several times a day (if you have the time, I know, we're all equally busy and all of us also need to work)

These fish have a gentle disposition and are friendly.

When you add them to the tank, they may be a bit shy at first, but after a while, they will show all their sociable attitude.

The male goby will immediately take over their area in the tank. They can show a little aggression towards their territory, but that's nothing serious.

In this case, you need to take care to give them enough space around the tank for them to move freely.

Ideally, you should keep them in a monoculture with other goby species to reduce the risk of stress.

In addition, when you keep them with your fellow humans, it becomes a lot easier to manage and maintain them and their health.

Some other compatible tank teammates that are not of the same type include:

Guppies

Shrimp Amano

Nerite snail

When does the Bee Goby spawn?

When conditions are favourable in the aquatic environment you provide, they will begin to breed

When you notice that the female goby's belly is swollen and the male goby is lighter in colour, they are ready to spawn.

If you want to breed a "bee goby colony", you should pay attention to the pregnant female or not, you will immediately see their abdomen slightly protruding.

The female goby can lay up to 200 eggs at a time in a small ceramic tube, in a seashell or in a flower pot.

After successful breeding, you must immediately remove the female from the tank and keep the male.

It is advisable to transfer the eggs to another tank for the fry to survive. The incubation period lasts from 7 to 9 days.

Newly hatched fry are extremely small and will take anywhere from a week to 10 days to begin swimming freely around the tank.

At this point, you need to feed them infusoria until they are mature enough to switch to an adult diet.

So that's all I've walked you through the entire basic life cycle of Bumblebee Gobies.

I find them very worthy to have in your tank or if you love them, you can reserve a tank to take care of and enjoy the joy they bring.

And I can't stop loving my customers and I love my Bee Gobys through reviews like:

Shelia.

“All came in alive despite the size they came in, and are all now starting to size up and show colour! Lovely schooling fish!”

  Scott Mc

“Love the Bumble Bee Gobies. Had them for about a month now, great personalities and fun fish”
