Giants trade for Ben Bredeson as offensive line shakeup continues

Work in progress.

That is the ongoing status of the Giants and their offensive line. They continue to make moves to bolster their depth, and on Tuesday they acquired guard Ben Bredeson in a trade with the Ravens.

This comes a day after the Giants shipped defensive lineman B.J. Hill to the Bengals for center Billy Price.

The Giants get a Ravens’ 2022 fifth-round pick (via the Chiefs) and also a 2023 seventh-round pick, plus Bredeson. The Giants sent a 2022 fourth-round pick to the Ravens.

Figure that Price and Bredeson are young interior linemen who will stick on the roster and, perhaps, challenge for playing time at some point.

It is clear the Giants were not pleased with the depth they tried to put together their offensive line and were still reeling from the sudden retirements of Joe Looney and Zach Fulton. On cut-down day, they purged the roster of players with experience — Jonotthan Harrison and Kenny Wiggins, plus Ted Larsen (waived/injured) — and youngsters — Jackson Barton, Jake Burton, Chad Slade and Brett Heggie.  This leaves Price, Bredeson and Nate Solder as three reserves on the offensive line.

The starters at the moment are Andrew Thomas, Shane Lemieux, Nick Gates, Will Hernandez and Matt Peart, although Solder could move in and replace Peart at right tackle.

Bredeson, 22, was a fourth-round pick out of Michigan in 2020. He played in 10 games as a rookie, with no starts.  At 6-foot-5 and 315 pounds, he has college experience at guard and also center. Price, 26, is a former first round pick of the Bengals, out of Ohio State.
