The Universal Declaration of Human Rights of December 10th, 1948 defines rights to which all people are entitled without restriction from birth. With the "International Human Rights Day" the United Nations reminds us that these rights are repeatedly violated worldwide.

Although the Declaration is not a binding document it inspired more than 60 human rights treaties, which together form an international human rights standard. Human rights are also at the heart of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Thus, human rights are promoted through progress in all SDGs and the SDGs are promoted through progress in human rights.

The OeAD with its programmes sets initiatives that address human rights. In addition to the annual cooperation of the APPEAR programme with the "this human world" International Human Rights Film Festival the OeAD supports projects in development cooperation, Erasmus+, Public Science and cultural education with schools. We will present some of them on the OeAD’s Facebook page in the run-up to Human Rights Day 2020.
