Frankfurter Würstchen (Austrian Hot Dog) is my recipe of the day with the blogging group Eat the World. Every month we visit a new country from the comfort of our device and share a recipe from that cuisine. This month we are visiting Austria. Glad you could join us.

Frankfurter Würstchen (Austrian Hot Dog)

I usually think of Austrian and German food the first time a cool day hits, sometime in late August. That’s when I catch my sauerkraut bug. And from there until late October, I make gads of it.

But in summer, I am in more of a biergarten mood. So there will be plenty of grilling, German potato salad, fried foods, and of course, beer. It’s probably the time of year you can convince me to drink lager or other German ale. I am usually an IPA girl myself.

With the 4th on the way, hot dogs are perfect. Hot dogs, or weiners, really are the namesake food of Austria.  And while Vienna sausages (Weiner wursts) can get a bad rap being packed in jars or cans, they can be found refrigerated or frozen in higher end markets. Click to view the item on Amazon but don’t buy those there. That price is wildly expensive. Just check them  out and find some locally with natural casings.

Stiglmeijer Frankfurters

You’ll want these wieners to be mixed meat with natural sheep casings. I can’t imagine only boiling those (as some suggest). Natural casings are made  to have a “pop” when you bite into them. So turn that grill on! They will be done when they have that light char and beautiful split (not some anemic pale luster).

You know, after the type meat and casing, toppings will seem very familiar. Mustard, ketchup, kraut.

Don’t give me crap about ketchup on hot dogs. Curry Ketchup is a far cry from Heinz. It’s spicy and  delicious. Click the photo to buy.

Extra Spicy Curry Ketchup

Stay away from the American ketchup for your fries as well. Use a righteous type of mayo, or just fall back on some “Pommes Sauce” which is a cousin to mayo. Click the photo if you want to buy that online.

I used a wine infused kraut on my dog. I do love a kraut dog occasionally!

And I already told you about my love of all things sauerkraut.  Use a wine infused kraut on your dog. Check the label. Or just make some using one of my recipes: Bavarian Sauerkraut

Bavarian Sauerkraut

Bavarian Sauerkraut

Here is a type sold in a can. It’s a good size for just hot dog toppings. I don’t usually make a big batch of kraut for a few sandwiches. And again, those prices! Ridiculous. Just peek and move along.

Mild Wine Sauerkraut

Bavarian Mustard is sweet, but I am sure you can get any local brand. Even honey mustard will do. Check some local shops like Home Goods which have some gourmet food items.

And of course I served these up with some sliced barrel pickles. I love those. You should to be able to find those at some markets with a deli.

Wow. Just looking at this makes me hungry for another. I guess I know what I will be cooking this weekend! Enjoy your summer grilling. But try to stay  out of that smoky air. Wildfires are a bummer.

  1. I’ll need to look for these sausages! I was a salesperson for the military commissaries and one of the lines was German foods. Sausages in the can and in a jar. They were very good. I am now on a quest to find not only the sausages but also the great curry ketchup.
