ODENTON, MD — A new breakfast eatery, named Shipley Do-Nuts, opened Monday in Odenton after months of anticipation. This will be the Texas chain's first site in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic, but the company plans to expand locally.

"The Odenton location has great visibility, and we think Marylanders are going to flip when they taste their first Shipley do-nut – it's simply The World’s Greatest Do-Nut," franchisee John Egan said in a press release, according to WMAR. "It's a big responsibility to introduce a legacy brand like Shipley to a new market. Our first priority is to offer our guests an outstanding experience that will keep them coming back time and again."

Shipley Do-Nuts serves more than 60 flavors of breakfast pastries made fresh daily. Donut favorites include classics like the plain glazed and new-age creations like the white iced with coconut.

The shop, located at 1099 Annapolis Road, will also offer kolaches. These pastries are doughy handhelds stuffed with sausage, ham, cheese or jalapeños.

Customers can wash their breakfast down with hot or iced coffee.

Anne Arundel County residents have been curious about the eatery for months. Shipley Do-Nuts placed "coming soon" signs last fall, and visible renovations began.

The building previously had a red brick façade when it housed a motorcycle business and then a chapel. The new tenant painted that masonry with a whitewash and added matching white tile to the cashier's counter.

The shop also added a drive-through lane.

Founder Lawrence Shipley Sr. crafted his original donut recipe in 1936 and sold his pastries for 5¢ per dozen on the wholesale market. He then opened the first Shipley Do-Nuts in Houston in the mid-1940s.

The company now has more than 300 locations, most of which are in the American South.

Shipley Do-Nuts announced last May that it plans to open more than 350 new sites throughout Texas, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Florida and Colorado within five years. Twenty-five of those locations are slated for Maryland.

Egan and his cousin Brian Lemek Jr. lead Mid-Atlantic Do-Nuts LLC. Peter Lemek is also part of the project, WMAR said.

Together, they opened the Odenton eatery. The team plans to grow Shipley Do-Nuts' footprint in the Old Line State from there.

"We immediately loved the Shipley brand story and the straightforwardness of the menu and, when we went to Texas to taste the product, we were hooked," Egan said in a May 2022 press release. "Not only does Shipley offer a great opportunity for expansion, but we also like the idea of being on essentially the ground floor of a beloved regional brand that is poised for national growth."

The Odenton eatery will be open daily from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
