Before Vera Farmiga starred in The Conjuring or When They See Us, she grew up in a busy New Jersey home with six other siblings — Victor Farmiga, Stephan Farmiga, Nadia (née Farmiga) Costa, Alexander Farmiga, Laryssa Farmiga and Taissa Farmiga.

The seven Farmiga kids were taught about Ukrainian culture and traditions by their immigrant parents, Mykhailo and Luba Farmiga. In their household, music, dancing, animals and faith were always present and important, Vera once told Inside Jersey and Vulture.

These days, most of the siblings lead private lives — with the exception of the youngest, Taissa, who also caught the acting bug after costarring with Vera in Higher Ground (2011).

Since that film jump-started her career, the actress has continued to find success in the industry with projects like American Horror Story and The Gilded Age.

Taissa, who is 21 years younger than Vera, speaks highly of her older sister. In September 2019, she posted a photo of Vera en route to the Emmys. “You gorgeous woman, always magnificent and inspiring,” Taissa wrote.

So who are Victor, Stephan, Nadia, Alexander, Laryssa and Taissa Farmiga? Read on to learn all about Vera Farmiga’s six siblings and her relationships with them.

They’re from New Jersey

The Farmigas lived in Irvington, New Jersey, before moving to rural Flemington, New Jersey.

Their father was a computer systems analyst, and their mother was a teacher. “They’re very sensible and grounded,” Vera told The Guardian of her parents. “You know, I'm one of seven, and they want success for all their children.”

They were immersed in Ukrainian culture growing up

Vera and her six siblings grew up in a family that celebrated their Ukrainian heritage. They grew up speaking Ukrainian — Vera didn’t learn English until she was 6 — and the older kids attended Ukrainian Catholic school.

On their rural property in Flemington, they raised animals. “Each child got to choose a pet and mine was a sheep,” Vera told Inside Jersey in 2009. “I bottle-fed it and it ran around our backyard. I think maybe I was a shepherdess in a past life.”

In addition to nature and animals, their family also enjoyed playing music and dancing together. “Every holiday and holy day, my gigantic family would get together, and a couple people would play guitars while I would sit by the piano and sing, trying to find new harmonies in the same old repertory songs,” the actress told Vulture in 2018. “And dance was a major method of learning, a way of passing down stories from history.”

Faith was important, too. During a 2011 interview with Christianity Today, Vera described their home as “Catholic-turned-Christian.” She told the outlet: “My father instilled in me … to define God, to define holiness for myself. That was my parents’ number one lesson for us. They are men and women of God and that's where they operate from.”

In 2011, Taissa made her film debut playing the teenage version of Vera’s character, Corinne Walker, in Higher Ground.

The movie, based on Carolyn S. Briggs’ memoir This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost, was also Vera’s directorial debut. “It just seemed like a no-brainer genetically,” Vera told Elle about casting her sister. “I’ve always been fascinated by her ever since she was a baby. She’s got moxie!”

The actress also joked to Vanity Fair that Taissa earning her role in the film was “blatant nepotism.”

Since Higher Ground, Taissa has continued to follow in her talented sister’s footsteps, starring in series like American Horror Story and films like The Bling Ring (2013) and The Nun (2018).

During a 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Taissa shared some of the pointers Vera had given her for being in a horror film. “She said, ‘Be wary about bringing work back into the walls of your home,’ ” Taissa recalled. “That was good advice.”

In March 2016, Victor, the eldest Farmiga sibling, sent Vera a special promo video for the season 4 premiere of her thriller series Bates Motel.

In the clip, Victor makes his hand a puppet and sings “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads. “My big bro @FarmigaV gifts ME with an @InsideBates Promo on HIS bday,” Vera tweeted. “Happy Bday Victor!!!”

Nadia has a catering company

Nadia and her husband, Wilson Costa, run a pop-up ordering service and catering company called Misto. The culinary project is inspired by Nadia’s Ukrainian background and Wilson’s Brazilian heritage, as well as their passions for living a healthy lifestyle, practicing sustainability and getting creative in the kitchen.

Misto is the Portuguese word for “mixed.” As Nadia explained on the company's website: “Misto describes us. Misto describes our food, where we grew up and our cultural heritages.”

The couple first met in New York City. At the time, Nadia had recently switched careers from mechanical engineering to the food industry.

She and Wilson worked together at Le Garrick restaurant in Manhattan’s theater district for a while before moving to New York’s Hudson Valley in 2002 to work in various restaurants there. It was during the COVID-19 pandemic that the duo decided to create Misto.

Taissa and her husband, filmmaker Hadley Klein, tied the knot on Aug. 8, 2020.

Later in November, Taissa posted a sweet snapshot of the duo at their intimate ceremony. In the Instagram photo, Taissa wore a white mask that said “Bride,” as she and Klein posed beside their wedding cake. “Married my best friend,” the actress wrote in her caption.

Taissa has since shared glimpses of their married life on social media. In July 2022, she posted several photos featuring the couple, including one of them taking a selfie and another embracing and sharing a kiss.

Many of Vera’s siblings live a more private life than she does

Although Vera and Taissa have three million Instagram followers combined, the rest of their siblings don’t share a lot with the public.

Nadia has a private Instagram account with just under 500 followers and writes in her bio: “Food. Family. Garden. Run. Cycle.”

Vera’s other sister, Laryssa, is also private on Instagram and has less than 100 followers. Her bio references three Bible verses.

One of Vera’s brothers, Alexander, has a private Instagram account with a little over 100 followers, and his profile photo features him enjoying a stack of pancakes.

Victor has a private Twitter account. Stephan doesn’t appear to be active on social media.
