Chaetomorpha algae

Chaeto algae, Chaetomorpha species is ideal for refugiums. This is the algae you see in refugiums for removing nitrates and phosphates.

This is a medium batch, a handful measuring about 25 cm or 10 in wide. It weighs around 50g, around 500 mls in volume and will be posted in a small box to prevent it getting crushed.

There are two main types; the thick stranded and thin stranded versions. This is the thin stranded type. I have both types and by far the thin stranded one grows fastest in my system. It is also edible and my hermit crabs often eat it if there is no other algae around. Some herbivorous fish may eat it, especially over the thicker stranded type.

It is extremely fast growing when sufficient water flow and lighting is supplied. It will absorb Nitrates and Phosphates as it food source, thus reducing or eliminating nutrients from your system. Small creatures such as copepods will live in the algae and are an excellent source of food for fish. One of my pictures is a macro photo showing at least 5 small edible creatures on one tiny square of the algae. I feed them to my Neon Gobies in my Nano, and that's all they eat.

This product is light and posted in its own box when purchased without other products.  It therefore attracts a smaller post charge (or free when basket totals over £10).  I will post from Monday to Thursday, excluding bank holidays. All shipments are by First class and all packages are boxed to prevent algae from being crushed in Royal Mails automatic letter sorting machines. The box will fit through the letter box.  When purchased with other items, it will be packaged within the larger box and shipping will include Fridays.

Macro algae may reduce Iodide levels in marine systems, depending on grow. It is recommended to test for Iodide levels and to supplement with an organic source of Iodide, such as Pink Burst Iodide supplement.
