Our Guide To Keeping Electric Blue Hap Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Sciaenochromis fryeri
    • Common name: Electric Blue Hap
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Malawi in Africa
    • Adult length: 15-20 cm (6-8 inches)
    • Lifespan: 8-10 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Electric Blue Haps require a tank with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. A minimum tank size of 200L is recommended for a small group of these fish.
    • Provide rock structures and caves for them to establish territories and breed.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Electric Blue Haps prefer water conditions with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Keep the water temperature between 23 to 28°C (73 to 82°F).
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • A powerful filtration system is necessary to maintain water quality, as these fish are messy eaters and produce a lot of waste.
    • Provide moderate water flow in the tank to mimic their natural habitat.
  5. Diet:

    • Electric Blue Haps are carnivorous and should be fed a diet high in protein.
    • Offer them a variety of foods including high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and krill.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Electric Blue Haps can be aggressive towards smaller or similarly colored fish, so choose tank mates carefully.
    • Compatible tank mates include larger, robust cichlids from Lake Malawi such as other Haplochromis species and Aulonocara species.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Electric Blue Haps are territorial and may exhibit aggression towards tank mates, especially during breeding.
    • Provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers to reduce aggression and territorial disputes.
