Our Guide To Keeping Elongate Mbuna Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Pseudotropheus elongatus
    • Common name: Elongate Mbuna
    • Family: Cichlidae
    • Origin: Lake Malawi in Africa
    • Adult length: 12 cm
    • Lifespan: 5 to 8 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Elongate Mbunas prefer rocky habitats with plenty of hiding places and caves.
    • Provide a tank with plenty of hiding spots and rock formations to mimic their natural environment.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Maintain water parameters with a pH of 7.5 to 8.5 and a temperature between 23 to 28°C (73 to 82°F).
    • Water hardness should be moderately hard to hard, around 10 to 20 dGH.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Provide efficient filtration to maintain water quality and oxygenation, as well as gentle to moderate water flow.
  5. Diet:

    • Elongate Mbunas are herbivores and feed primarily on algae and biofilm. Include a diet high in vegetable matter such as spirulina-based flakes or pellets.
    • Supplement their diet with occasional feedings of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Elongate Mbunas are territorial and aggressive, especially towards conspecifics and similar-looking species. Keep them with other Lake Malawi cichlids that can withstand their aggression.
    • Avoid keeping them with smaller or more passive fish that may become targets of aggression.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Elongate Mbunas are highly territorial and can be aggressive towards other fish, especially during breeding times.
    • Provide plenty of hiding places and territories to reduce aggression within the tank.
