Chinese Dota 2 legend Ame returns to pro play with Xtreme Gaming
Ame had been away from Dota 2's esports scene since December 2022, spending much of his time away from pro play streaming Dota 2 and other games.
Legendary Chinese Dota 2 player Wang "Ame" Chunyu has ended his retirement and returned to competitive play by joining Xtreme Gaming.
Xtreme Gaming announced on its official Weibo account on Monday (11 December) that they have acquired Ame in a transfer from LGD Gaming. Ame had been with LGD throughout his entire career in both the organisation's main and secondary rosters prior to his transfer.
"After friendly negotiations between various parties, and on the premise of fully respecting the players’ wishes, [LGD Gaming's Ame] will transfer to [Xtreme Gaming] immediate effect," a machine translation of Xtreme Gaming's statement read.
"His world is not only Dota, but the world of Dota cannot be without him."
Ame had been away from Dota 2's esports scene since December 2022, when he was moved to LGD's inactive roster following the team's 5th-6th place finish in The International (TI) 2022.
Ame spent most of his time away from pro play streaming Dota 2 and other games, becoming one of the biggest streamers in China in the process.
Aside from Dota 2, Ame was notably fond of HoYoverse games Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. He even cosplayed as the Genshin Impact character Childe back in January and the Honkai: Star Rail character Imbibitor Lunae in October.
October also saw Ame briefly return to competition and help China win the gold medal for Dota 2 in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Ame is considered one of the best players in the history of Dota 2 to have never won the Aegis of Champions. He came close twice in TI8 and TI10, losing in five-game epic grand finals showdowns to OG and Team Spirit, respectively.
On top of those two second place TI finishes, Ame also has third and fourth place finishes at TI9 and TI7, respectively, as well as three Major championships under his belt.
Ame now joins veteran position 5 support Ding "Dy" Cong in an Xtreme Gaming squad still in the process of rebuilding its roster. The team is currently without a midlaner, offlaner, and position 4 support player after Thiay "JT-" Jun Wen's move to G2.iG as well as Guo "Xm" Hongcheng and Zhao "XinQ" Zixing's transfer to Azure Ray.
Xtreme Gaming is expected to announce its full roster for the 2024 Dota 2 esports season early next year.
