Description

Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus, commonly known as the Goldflake angelfish, is a medium-large angelfish closely related to the more well-known A. trimaculatus. As juveniles they're very hard to separate, the only real difference being that xanthopunctatus have more pronounced vertical stripes on their body. Once the get older the differences are easy to see: xanthopunctatus has black in the anal, caudal and dorsal fin and these fins develop a blue rim around it. The body gets a little darker yellow but with golden spots all over the body. The blue from the mouth flow over in the face and sometimes even belly and parts of the body.

In nature they feed mainly on sponges and tunicates. This is also why wild caught specimens are hard to wean to the food we give in our aquaria. They transition easiest to a tank with a lot of sponges in it. Tank bred fish are a way easier to keep with this fish! Once adapted they're real omnivores eating anything from algae to meaty foods like mussel and shrimp, but probably need some sponges in their diet as well to really thrive. This fish also known to nibble on hard and soft corals as well as clam mantles, so certainly not reef safe!
